Kim Stanley Robinson - 'Red/Green/Blue Mars' trilogy - solid books to get through but well worth the effort imho.

There's "Grimspace" and "Wanderlust" by Ann Aguirre, which are great fun - and a rollicking adventure. "Horizon" by Mary Rosenblum is another great read. "The Eternity Artifact" by L.E. Modesitt Jr is a classic space opera story. The Saga of the 7 Suns by Kevin J. Anderson.

One of the classic's, if you haven't already read them, are the Dune series of books by Frank Herbert. A crackin' good read, Grommit!!! :o)

G. Lyon says:
Seriously though, I would avoid Hamilton and Reynolds. Hamilton writes like a horny adrenaline fuelled teenager and Reynolds, while his vision is strong, just lacks any credible narrative style and from the evidence of his characters I would say that his understanding of people is severely limited and 2 dimensional.

The Kim Stanlet Robinson (Mars Trilogy) and Frank Herbert (Dune Series) are sound bets.

Have you tried looking at the 'SF masterworks series'? It is a collection of the 100 best sci-fi novels since sci-fi began. It is comprehensive and gives a firm grounding in the subject, also the majority of them are spectacular. You should be able to find lists of them on wikipedia or even the Listmania! section here on amazon. (There are several others by Arthur C Clarke in the series and it was his 'The City and the Stars' that got me back into sci-fi after a 10 year sabbatical).

Enjoy your reading.

You could try 'Child of the Hive' which is newly published. Not set in space but a definate Sci Fi mystery, I'm part way through and enjoying it very much.

Logorrhea.ie says:
Hamilton is one of my favourite authors but its pretty heavy stuff. I'd recommend him to anyone that will listen but I'm not sure if he really does the whole exploration stuff.

I presume your already read the Rama series?

I've written a 12-part sci-fi series about a comet racing toward Earth and the small band of people who try to stop it/ plan for the worst in case they can't. I've spent a long time writing these and care more about getting readers than making money - that's why book one only costs less than a pound. The Inner Circle - Book One of Comet Clement series Within a week I will be releasing books 2 and 3 together for the same inexpensive price. Would love for you to check them out, thanks.

Tertiary

This is my own book, set in the far past and near future of this planet. No apologies for pitching my own work, but I'd also suggest one of my favourite epic works - 'Otherland' by Tad Williams.
