Freebie from the Baen Free Library
With the Lightnings (Lt. Leary) by David Drake (1 Jul 2000)

Recommended as the the first in the long running RCN Lt. Leary/Munday space opera series by David Drake It's similar to Patrick O'Brian's Captain Aubrey/Maturin books ( Master and Commander, Post Captain, HMS Surprise etc) except that the interest in biology is transfered to the officer and the setting on Cinnabar and client planets is part 18th Century RN and part Republican Rome.

If you want to pay the author you get a additional afterword.

Another Baen Free Library freebie, a standalone fantasy this time

Old Nathan by David Drake (1 Oct 1991)

FIFTH YEARS AFTER
THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION,
MAGIC IS LOOSE IN THE BACKWOODS

The forces of evil are poised to prey on the folk of the hamlets and hollows: witches, demons, and red-handed men-but first they'll have to overcome Old Nathan the Wizard.

He doesn't claim much for his magical powers, but they're real enough for what they are -- and besides, he hasn't forgotten how to use his long flintlock rifle ....

Enter the gritty, realistic world of Old Nathan, a backwoodsman who talks to animals and says he'll face The Devil himself-and who in the end will have to face The Devil in very fact.

Or if you want to pay the author then you get an additional afterword

Old Nathan, Second Edition by David Drake

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liaden Universe
