Radar says:
I'm looking forward to The Krotons. It's a tidy little actioner, but I think its been underrated because it was broadcast between the epics The Invasion and The Seeds of Death and these stories have overshadowed it. But longer isn't necessarily better: The Invasion is overlong. Also all stories in season 6 suffer because The Mind Robber stands tall over every other story.

Ssorg says:
Krotons, Greatest Show and Planet of Giants are now available to pre-order.

This means that virtually all of the yet to be confirmed titles are the ones I'm desperately waiting for - Reign of Terror, Terror of the Zygons, Mind of Evil, Ambassadors of Death, the two most recently discovered episodes and hopefully, Tenth Planet and Ice Warriors with Reign of Terror style animation.

Radar says:
I think you may have to wait for the Ambassadors of Death and Mind of Evil due to technical challenges in restoring the latent colour signal on the b&w sections. If they released the Tenth Planet and Ice Warriors with animated episodes as per The Invasion, perhaps the narrated telesnaps that were used to bridge the gap in the VHS release of these stories could be an extra on the DVD?

In reply to an earlier post on 1 May 2012 20:33:36 BDT
Ssorg says:
You're right, Radar. The two Pertwee stories will almost certainly be the last and I never had any illusions about that. The longer they wait, the more sophisticated the recolourisation software will become and the cost decrease at the same time. It's still frustrating though!

I hope they continue with the Revisitations after that, if not before! The early attempts at Reverse Standards Conversion (such as Claws of Axos) exhibited a lot of noise on edges of objects that was quite painful to watch. Later restorations like The Mutants are far easier on the eye.

Ancient One says:
With the releases coming to an end, perhaps we should start a new discussion? Like...Which stories should get the Revisitations treatment?

My top two would be: Earthshock, and The Silurians.

Posted on 2 May 2012 14:58:25 BDT
Radar says:
An interesting choice of stories. The Silurians has a distinct 'bubble' effect, probably residual interference from merging two video signals. This is most noticeable in daylight scenes. Perhaps this could be smoothed out as technology progresses. Earthshock could do with a wash 'n' brush up, particularly the clips of previous doctors that the Cybermen view (although in my humble opinion, the main challenge is the somewhat illogical plot).

In reply to an earlier post on 2 May 2012 18:42:09 BDT
Ancient One says:
And there's an annoying glitch in Earthshock ep 2. When Ringway is flipping through the monitor channells and comes to the one that's 'out', the whole screen flickers, including Ringway, console, walls..instead of just the monitor he's watching. The fault wasn't there on it's original tx, nor the vhs release, and it just irks the hell out of me that it's on the dvd.

Still...watching Adric go out in a blaze of idiocy always cheers me up!!

We can add vengance on varos se to the list of releases as DWM lists it as getting released 10th september. I think we wont have to wait for ambassadors as long as you think. Peter Crocker hinted on twitter on the 5th of april that he was near the end of it so woulnt suprise me if that it came sooner rather than later. A famous youtuber babecolour is working on colourising ep 1 of mind of evil by hand (because there is no chroma dots colour recovery on episode 1 is not possible). Episode 2 to 6 has went through the colour recovery process but there is still some work to do. As for last story steve roberts mentioned in an interview that zygons has been earmarked as the last release but he doesnt know if thats still the case. As for titles i would like revisited Ark in space could look a lot better plus could do with some more extras. Aztecs looks poor in comparison with stories arround it and could look a lot better now. Claws of axos is missing a making of plus as Ssorg mentioned picture quality could be better.

Paul Tapner says:
There is one thing that remains unreleased in any form to this day that I would like: Scream of the Shalka. They wouldn't bring that out in 2005 because they thought having a different ninth doctor would confuse casual viewers. But I think we're long past that now.

pertweefan says:
Gordon, I think you're getting mixed up between Ambassadors of Death and Mind of Evil. It's "Mind" that's missing the chroma dots on episode 1 and that Babelcolour is colourising by hand.
I wait with bated breath for both of them, but only one at the most this year I think - probably neither.

In reply to an earlier post on 4 May 2012 03:23:21 BDT
yeah i missed out the words mind of evil (my mistake for not proof reading)but have changed it

Ssorg says:
I had an email from Play to say that Planet of Giants will now be released on 30th July, three weeks earlier than previously announced. As Greatest Show in the Galaxy was already due on 30th, I imagine that means its release will also be shifted.

In the meanwhile, you can enjoy the cover artwork for those two as well as Krotons as they are now up on Amazon and Play.

Finally, it's also been announced that the Vengence on Varos Special Edition will be out on September 10th.

Paul Tapner says:
Actually there is a revisitation I would like: Silver Nemesis. A dvd edition with the extended version from the VHS and the documentary as well

Radar says:
Fantastic news on the Mind of Evil in colour possibly coming to DVD sooner than expected. I recently rewatched it on what is now fourteen years old VHS tape and it absolutely chills me. It may be something to do with seeing it on B&w videotape but I really hope that atmosphere transfers to colour. I remember buying this on May Day '98. Just think what followed: Big Finish, DVD, a host of missing episodes were found. And the new series started on TV.

Steve Roberts confirmed at utopia 2012 event that inferno will be revisited for a 2013 release utilising a combination of film recordings and RSC colour.

Ssorg says:
Now that is very interesting! For a while now, BBC DVD have been operating a just in time policy as far as BBFC classification goes and doing things in release order. That being the case, this would suggest that Ambassadors will be the next release after Varos SE. It's by no means certain, of course, but I certainly hope so.

Whatever, it seems likely that I won't have to wait anywhere near as long as I was expecting.

And with Reign of Terror apparently also scheduled for 2012, the tail end of this year seems to be shaping up very nicely.

Posted on 25 May 2012 09:37:04 BDT
Good news. Chris chapman who did the making of for ambassadors has said its in full colour and will be the main feature (not like dinos ep 1 which had the colour version as an alternative) and chris also has at the last minute put restored colour footage into the making of.

Ssorg says:
The trailer for Ambassadors of Death was passed today by the BBFC. That makes it almost certain that this will be the release after Vengeance on Varos SE (no trailer has been classified out of release order for quite some time.) I'm guessing we'll be seeing this in October.

In reply to an earlier post on 16 Jun 2012 00:18:45 BDT
The cover is done for it too apparently, it's definitely on its way!

I thought it would be good to do a little recap for people that have lost track.

Upcoming Confirmed uk release dates

July 2nd Krotons

July 30th Greatest show in the Galaxy

August20th Planet of Giants

September 10th Vengeance on Varos

Also potentially 2012 releases but actual release date not yet confirmed

Ambassadors of Death (everything passed by the bbfc expected to be next release after Varos)

Reign of terror with eps 4 and 5 animated (announced as likely for release late 2012)

Legacy box (shada/more than 30 years in the tardis documentary) (announced as likely released in 2012) (rumoured but currently unconfirmed the vhs version of shada will be the version on the DVD. It has 100 per cent confirmed it won't be Ian Levine's animated version. That was rejected by Dan Hall as apparently he didn't feel it was up to standard)

2013 and beyond

Terror of the zygons (extras apparently complete, Steve Roberts hinted there is something special planned but it's not cgi)

10th planet (episode 4 missing) (extras apparently complete) (potentially ep 4 could get animated but that is unconfirmed. If animated release might not be till late 2013 due to length of time taken to animate.

Ice Warriors (episodes 2 and 3 missing) (extras apparently complete) (potentially eps 2 and 3 could get animated but that is currently unconfirmed. If animated release might not be till late 2013 or even later due to length of time taken to animate)

Mind of evil (extras more or less complete) (episode 1 is being colourised by babelcolour. Due to length of time recolourisation it may not get released till late 2013 as possible or even later) (episodes 2 to 6 colourised due to colour recovery process)

Uncovered episodes

Recently recovered episode galaxy 4 episode 3 is rumoured to appear on 10th planet. It could get its own release with potential animation but it's doubtful due to cost of animation of almost 3 episodes (6 minutes of episode 1 still exist) in the current financial climate.

Recently recovered episode underwater menace episode 2 could potentially be on ice warriors dvd or could get underwater menace episode 3 along with 2 and potentially animate episodes 1 and 4 to complete the story however what is happening to underwater menace episode 2 is currently unknown.

Both episodes will not be in a lost in time box set revisit or a lost in time 2 set. Steve Roberts has said there are no plans to do either.

Future Revisitations/special editions

Dan Hall has said there are no plans to do a forth Revisitations box set but there are plans to have single rereleases

Inferno has been confirmed for 2013.

Claws of axos (Katy manning let slip on twitter that she was recording chat for axos DVD)

Aztecs (Steve Roberts mentioned it's a good candidate for a revisit)

Ark in space (Steve Roberts mentioned it's a good candidate for a revisit)

Moonbase (Brian Hodgson of the bbc radiophonic workshop has claimed he has done a commentary for moonbase) (Steve Roberts confirming no lost in time revisit doesn't rule out a separate rerelease) (potentially a candidate for animation as only 2 eps missing plus it would get its own dvd case which the original didn't have)

The crusade(Steve Roberts confirming no lost in time revisit doesn't rule out a separate rerelease) (potentially a candidate for animation as only 2 eps missing plus it would get its own dvd case which the original didn't have)

Due to the length of time animating other stories ie 10th planet/ice warriors (and that is if it is animated) I doubt we are going to see either moonbase or crusade till at least 2014 that's if they are getting rereleased and the animation treatment

The Future

Dan hall has hinted that the range won't end in 2013 like many have speculated and the range would continue but not as we know it. Possible Future animations (say once or twice a year) and special editions rereleases would be my guess along with potential delays if needed for mind of evil/ice warriors/10th planet is possibly what he meant

Victor says:
Hi Gordon,

Thanks for the round-up. There was one confirmed release in it (Planet of the Giants) that I had missed, it's now on pre-order!

Given the level of interest already shown in the revisitations and special edition re-releases, it is no real surprise that releases will continue past that of the final complete serial. I am especially interested in the information you give regarding more releases for incomplete serials and recently discovered episodes. Here's hoping there's enough interest for plenty more animations a la Invasion!

Cheers.
