I read a book a few years ago. You were told who the murderer was from the start, a little man called george who lived with his wife. He murdered prostitutes and was always smiling showing his little teeth. This book was a very good read and I could picture what this little man looked like. Does anyone know the author and title

When I was a pre-teen (late 1990's) I read a science fiction book that I can't remember the title of and would appreciate some help finding it. The details I do remember are:

It was a community who lived in the forest, they feared to leave their town.
They would tie a rope anchored onto a central tree around their waists when leaving so that they could find their way back.
They named children by burning a log taken from a special/magic tree, the first noise they heard is what the child would be named.
Plot consisted of young boy (possibly named Twig?) getting lost, many grotesque and terrifying monsters are battled.
Probably part of a series.
Most likely a teenage-aimed novel but, could possibly be for adults.

If anybody remembers it I would love to hear from you!
