Can anyone recommend any good books which are a bit more grown up than the ones I've mentioned? I'm 24 and enjoy reading this type of book but need ones that feel more adult, while the romance is nice, the whole soulmate and love at first sight thing gets pretty old. A little sex/romance is great but as long as it has some violence, some action and substance to it that would be great!

S.L. Baum says:
Try the Queen Betsy Series - "undead and ..." there are 9 or so of them. I don't know if they fit in the substance category but adult and fun and sex/romance (without the love at first sight thing).
Undead and Unwed (Undead Series) - there is the first one.

Roman Totale says:
Ann Rice's Vampire Chronicles series, starting with 'Interview with a Vampire'

EmmaH says:
I agree with Roman, Anne Rice's series is brilliant, there are loads. Start with "Interview" then move onto "The Vampire Lestat" nice bit of gothic vampire stuff but with much more rounded and interesting characters.

You might like the Lilith St. Crow books. Possibly The Weather Wardens series (I think by Rachel Caine). Venturing further afield, have you tried Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden series? BTW, I also like many of Anne Rice's earlier books too.

Kim Harrison's Hollows books probably qualify. There's a distinct sense that the protagonist, who is think is 25, is trying to be a grown up because the world wants her to be without realising she is an adult and so, technically, is a grown up.

You might want to try the Riley Jensen novels by Keri Arthur - she's part vampire, part werewolf, and is a kickass agent overseeing paranormals who exist in slightly futuristic Melbourne society. Lots of action, lots of sex and yummy guys, the yummiest of which is her true love Quinn. They do need to be read in order, and all should be at your local library.

Thanks for those suggestions! Have looked up a couple already and the ones by Keri Arthur and Kim Harrison look right up my alley! Can't wait to get trhough a few more books I have at home so I can start buying in a new load! I will definitely have to give the Anne Rice series a go too, only thing is I know my husband will try stealing them and dog-ear the pages!

I can seriously recommend Fallen Embers by Lauri J Owen, due out in September but currently available to pre-order. I've read the Sookie Stackhouse books, and this is more adult. It has what you're asking for - some sex and romance, but also battles, a new system of magic, shape-changers and mages. I preferred this to the True Blood stuff and Twilight, and it's the first of a series.Fallen Embers

LEP says:
Try Ann Bishop's Black Jewels trilogy and add-on books such as The Invisible Thread. Also, her Sebastien and Belladonna duo.

Wow, thanks everyone, there are some great suggestions in there, I have added tonnes to my wish list, maybe a few too many as my book wish list is now up to 65 books! That's probably a little high but there are loads in there that aren't being released yet so they don't count :) Least my hubby won't have any excuses for not knowing what to get me for my birthday and christmas this year!

I would seriously recommend J.R. Ward Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I'm very much like yourself and find the twilight series a little too young (I'm 22!)- The above mentioned is a really good compromise- really good characters and a little more action-packed with the same romantic undercurrent. Also a very good underlying plot across all of the books. I would very much recommend. Also, Christine Feehan, but I have to add, once you've read three or four, they're fairly predictable. Hope this helps! :)

D. Watson says:
Definitely try JR Ward Black Brotherhood Series. Also, the Sookie Stackhouse stories by Charlaine Harris (True Blood is based on these). They are not as sexually explicit as the TV series and the books are different enough that you will still get surprises even if you have watched the TV show. Also nother great reads are the Kresley Cole Immortals After Dark series (A Hunger Like NO Other is the first book) These are vampire/werewolf/demon and more. They are quite explicit but I think they are fab. Happy Reading :0)

If you get sick of vampire books you should definitely check out Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series. First one is called 'Slave to Sensation'. Don't be turned off by the covers, has plenty of romance, action and keeps you guessing throughout the series! Also made me laugh out loud with some dry/quirky humour. Definitely worth the read in my opinion. (When you get a chance after the 65 already on your wish list!!) Happy reading!

The best of the bunch are defiantly Laurell K Hamilton, Sherrilyn Kenyon, J R Ward - but also worth checking out The Women of OtherWorld series by Kelley Armstrong. All different supernatural females (witches, werewolves, etc), lots of action, drama and romance. The first book is Bitten.

Besides the authors mentioned in previous posts - I have also found Cheyenne McCray, Richelle Mead, Alexandra Ivy and Karen Marie Moning are totally un-put-downable!
