D. Reynolds says:
I think we are all guilty at times of being too centred on UK and US bands/ performers. Here's the first in a series of posts to look beyond the geographical boundaries imposed by so many. Let's start in Australia; after all, they speak the same language and despite dullards like INXS and Siverchair they have produced loads of great groups and singers. Here are some to start the ball rolling, from the mainstream to the obscure:

AC/DC (obvious choice but it never ceases to amaze me how many people think they're yanks)
Nick Cave/ Birthday party
The Saints
Radio Birdman
Rose Tattoo
Hoodoo Gurus
Cosmic Psychos
Celibate Rifles
Hard Ons
New Christs
Mass Appeal
Dirty Three
GOD (one of many bands with this monicker, the Oz variant were a very accomplished Garage rock band)
Hobbs' Angel of Death
The Berzerker
Pisschrist
.......and of course the delightful Kylie (and Dannii if you must).

O.k, how about Avalanches, Beck Sian ( Kate Bush's cousin), who is a brilliant folk singer, and although not Australian but from New Zealand The Chills. I was going to start a similar thread, but make it worldwide. This is a good start. Sorry if this doesn't make sense, but I'm a bit pi##ed celebrating Liverpool beating Utd, YES!! Still support Spurs tho!

D. Reynolds says:
Yes, but I wouldn't include Kiwis in an aussie thread.... think of the bother it would cause if you called Scots/ Welsh/ Irish 'English'. As for Liverpool beating Man U.....drink and be merry. I'm off to watch MOTD.

Nobody's mentioned Kylie!

Then theres The Seekers and Men at Work.

Mark Kibble, I'll think you'll find Kylie's name was mentioned in the first post. How about The Doors, no hang on I'm thinking of the Australian Doors. Time for bed says Zebedee, night.

Funny that, saw Jason Donavon live at Jumpin' Jacks in Bournemouth a few years ago. I went purely because my wife likes him, well thats my story!

Bit unfair to Silverchair who admittedly are a bit of a mixed bag but haVE DONE SOME EXCELLENT STUFf, INXS likewise did some thourghily decent music. After your first 2 don't recognise any of them yet strangleyyou have missed ou on one of their well known sons Midnight Oil(another mixed bag)

telly addict says:
just thought I'd mention Crowded House (New Zealand) although one is Australian and the drummer is now American following the sad death of Paul Hester. Also Split Enz (where Crowded House originated from) and obviously Neil & Tim Finn individually.
Aside from that, how about Canadians Leonard Cohen, kd Lang etc
This could be expanded worlwide as already mentioned.
p.s. gotta mention Men At Work if only for the (obvious) song Down Under
sorry just scrolled up and seen the mention of Men At Work

Next you'll be telling me the Bee Gees and Olivia Neutron Bomb are Australian!

In reply to an earlier post on 14 Mar 2009 23:44:56 GMT
Olivia Neutron Bomb would only have had one hit and disappeared into oblivion, so probably not worth mentioning.

Martin The Bee Gees were born on the Isle of Man to English parents, lived in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester, England and during their childhood years moved to Brisbane, Australia.
Best bones.

Hi DR, sorry, must have glazed over your post earlier. The Scots would be extremely pleased if the English took responsibility for The Proclaimers and/or laid claim to the Bay City Rollers.

MC Zaptone says:
OK folks - heres a treat for you. No one has yet mentioned 'The Skyhooks' from Melbourne (1973 - 90) and possibly Oz's biggest rock act. If you want a good laugh, type their name into youtube and watch them perform 'Living In The Seventies' and watch Graeme 'Shirley' Strachan, Bongo Bob, Red Symons and the gloriously titled Freddie Kaboodleschnitzer strutting their stuff, oh dear oh dear !!
They took the antipodean world by storm with such classics as: You Only Like Me Coz I'm Good In Bed; Straight In A Gay Gay World; Why Don't You All Get F**ked and Women In Uniform.

If we're including N.Z. bands I nominate Fat Freddy's Drop a current, tight band that have sold well here and stateside.

Martin R. Lewis; The Four Skins, like the majority of Oi! bands, were from London.
MCFC Trick; nice mention of The Church. Not widely known but well loved by the few.

The Easybeats mate! Their 60's hit 'Friday on my Mind' is an all time garage rock classic! Wasn't Angus and Malcolm Young from AC/DC's brother George in the Easybeats? You should ask Peter Anderson as he probably shared a glass of p*ss with him and the rest of AC/DC (see Peter's hilarious post on the 'Star Stories' thread). don't know how The 4 Skins came into this conversation, but yes they were from London, I saw them once back in the early 80's and seemed to remember enjoying having beer chucked all over me and getting barged about by loads of hard looking nutters! I quite enjoyed the 'Oi' movement, but being Jewish I did find it a bit 'dodgy' when the skins started with the 'Sieg Heils' it was a case of I'll get my coat...f**king quick!
