Yeh, it has the opposite effect of its intention.

"Calm the waters, people", "listen up", more phrases that irritate intensely.

Sorry to derail the conversation again, but does anybody here know what's happening to 5 notes? Whenever I pay for small purchases with a 10 note I always receive my change all in coins with a mumbled apology. On the rare occasions when I do get hold of a 5 note it's always an old, dog-eared one. Has some decision been made to withdraw them all from circulation?

Oh, hold on... I've just found the answer to my question. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12668840

Soon they will become collectable and therefore worth more than a fiver..................

Pre 1990 2pp coins have a different metallic composition to the new ones, and are reputedly worth more than 2p in metal value.

I have a 20 million Mark note from 1922 and was hoping that Germany goes back to Mark so that I can cash it in.

Still plenty of fivers up here - I have 3 at the moment, 2 of them English.
My husband once worked for an embossing machine company and I'm the proud owner of an authentic-looking (!) bank-card for Albert Speer, Bundesbank.

I've no problem with access to fivers; it's the fifties and hundreds that remain elusive.

Smitty - Yes, "bronze" coins are now made of iron with a very thin coating of copper. You can sort pre-1992 pennies and twopences from older ones using a magnet.

Re your banknote, my dad has a few of those. The word "Reichsmark" and the gothic script are a bit of a giveaway. I somehow don't think even the most bored bank teller in Germany will fall for an attempt to exchange one.

Correct on both counts, Gordon, sadly so on the latter.

I think there's a place in this world for the wonderfully named grote to make a comeback. A grote or two amongst your thre'penny bits and Robert's your mother's brother.
