You'll not get much funkier than Bernard "Pretty" Purdie & Idris Muhammad!

It's got to be the jazz-rock drummers like Billy Cobham, Tony Williams, Lenny White and Michael Walden.

A. Smith says:
How about the "funky drummer" himself Clyde Stubblefield. Or John "Jabo" Starks.

Simon says:
I don't know the geezer's name but whoever it was that held down the rhythm to The Rimshot's "Do What You Feel Pt.1 and Pt.2" gets my vote! Also, the one from the original Kool & The Gang line-up, back when they were funkier than a mosquito's tweeter (if that's possible)

Nugent Dirt says:
Agree with all suggestions so far but top of the pile for me are Tony Allen (Fela Kuti), Zigaboo (Meters) , Dave Garibaldi (Tower of Power), Tony Thompson (Chic) and Mike Clark (Headhunters). There's also Adam Deitch who's played with John Scofield on his more recent funk fusion albums.

well, if you extend into jazz a bit then you have a whole heap of stixmen - like dennis chambers, vinnie colaiuta or steve gadd who are as funky as any - though james gadson, keith carlock, lenny white and airto and....well, where do you stop????????

Hi everyone - I can't really vouch for the 80's onwards but I've always rated Zigaboo Modeliste from The Meters (mentioned on a previous post), Greg Errico from Sly & The Family Stone and any of P-Funk's drummers, (especially Tyrone Lampkin and Tiki Fulwood).

Bill Peter says:
The late, great Robbie McIntosh of the Average White Band. He had a unique mixture of technique and feel for funky music.
