When Does The Soul Arrive?

According to the Catholic Church a new life (and soul?) appear at the moment of conception. But, what happens in the case of twins? They don't separate into two embryos until after conception. Does the soul split too? Does one not have a soul? Or is the Church mistaken about the whole thing?

Bingo. They're making it up as they go along. The soul is basically a piece of invisible wibble that some religious people like to talk about. But if you ask what part it plays specifically in human makeup you will get no clear answers. It's there, it's undetectable (which raises the question of how they know it's there), and ultimately they will claim all sorts of things and talk your ears off in the process. They believe in it, in the same way they believe in a deity; blind faith

The soul arrives when the Soul Train gets here.

Twins can't have one soul split in two because splitting your soul would make you go mad. I know this because I read it in Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince.

My soul left me in 1973 on a Midnight Train to Georgia.

Lessfatman says:
I hate to be a killjoy but the brain function that could be considered as the basis of the consciousness which in colloquial speech is referred to as 'soul' are there in place after 22nd week of pregnancy.

Even though there is no such thing as 'soul' there is such a concept and a corresponding function in our brain.
Soul isn't, it happens.

Mr. M.J. Bowyer

On this subject I remember a few years go watching a discussion show about stem cell research and human cloning. One woman from the audience said that she was against human cloning because as there would be no conception that would mean a clone would be born without a soul.

Spin says:
G: What about twins or triplets? How is the soul divided amongst them, if indeed it is in fact divisible? If it is divisible then it is not the "unity" some folks claim it to be. How does half, or a third of a soul, develop into a full soul? In my opinion, the word "Soul" is no more than a term applied to the "personification" of ones moral sense and behaviour, not a real entity existing in nature.

IN; I am not a fan of Rowling (I consider her to have ripped off Tolkein and Pratchett in a haze of publicity for badly written, generic tosh) and I know nothing about her. So I apologise but I do not get your slight. =)

In Jacob Bronowski's book 'The Ascent of Man', he stated that human beings have a small area in their brains unlike that of other animals including primates. No one has picked up on this since, but even though he had no religious beliefs he seemed to consider that humans might be different in some way.

Spin says:
CE; Of course humans are different. They have opposable thumbs requiring a portion of their brain to utilise that mutation. We are not "toolmakers" simply because of Gods will; our physiology determines our manipulation of the environment.

Actually in a tv documentary recently apes were shown using tools, though not making them. So I understand what you are saying.

So which came first, the thumb or the brain?
