Going by the OP I have to assume that you are a card carrying theist Simon...

That may be Simon, but it is without doubt an attack on dumbo thickoes. In fact it goes without saying, (though I shall say it anyway in time honoured tradition) that this is the most dumbo thickophobic thread that I have ever seen on the religion forum. I shall of course be forced, (in time honoured tradition) to report it to the god of the forum.

Dumbo thickoes of the world unite. You have nothing to lose but your, er...................

"This thread is NOT an attack on religion. "

NOR was it good satire.

Being an illiterate atheist I could be wrong, but don't you spell it as T H I C K O, rather that thickoe?

Its amazing isn't it - but wouldn't it be even more amazing if there was a thing (Lets call that God) that just decided to build everything, out of nothing, and give it rules that it cannot interfere with and then leave it there for billions of years (Lets call that the Universe). Then, for no particular reason, decides to choose one of those balls of rock floating in the universe as a play thing (Lets call that Earth). Then leaves Earth to create itself using the laws that God cannot interfere with. Out of all the floating rocks this one develops life and then over the next couple of billions years that life (entirely consistent with the laws that God created, but is unable to influence) develops a form called humans. God decides that he is not going to get involved in this just yet. Then @ 6 thousand years ago God decides to pick on strand of all those Humans and makes them his chosen people (Lets call them Jews). For 4,000 years God plays with the Jews and allows them to think of themselves as rulers of the universe. Then God has a change of heart, sends his offspring to earth to be killed on a cross as some form of human sacrifice and to allow non Jews to worship him. The Roman Empire chooses to force everybody to worship God, and after the Roman Empire disappears the Church remains.

Doesn't that sound a bit crazy as an idea?

I haven't got an answer for how the Universe started, I am just pointing out that god did it is probably not the answer.

No, not really. We have good evidence that something can appear from nothing e.g. electron/positron pairs. Quantum fluctuations producing vacuum energy etc...

I would say religion is a concept believed by people who think reality should be they way they want it to be rather than the way it is.

G. Heron says:
Jet

In the beginning there just happened to be a supreme being of infinite power and intellect who has no origin and he thought it would be nice to make a universe to play with.

"G. Heron. Or by pure chance "

I don't know how the universe came to exist, I think it is a subject for investigation. You have already decided on a solution without as far as I can see any supporting evidence.

Why is there only 2 possibilities and why does one have to be because god did it?
