The second and final part of this series was shown last night on Channel 4 and is repeated on Monday night (I Think), after which it will be on 4OD.

This episode looks at the psychology of religious belief and includes a number of interesting experiments, the main one being to induce a religious-like experience in an atheist. He shows that we are in fact wired for religious-like belief and that even skeptics will demonstrate irrational superstitious reactions given the appropriate stimulus.

It isn't anti-religious - Derren makes a particular point of recognising the happiness that faith brings to many people and stresses that his aim is not to deride those with faith or suggest they are foolish. So, I can thoroughly recommend every one watch it and I'd be interested on your views from it.

Apologies to those not in the UK as I don't think you will be able to view it on the Internet.

Glad to see you have an open mind on the subject.

What's your particular issue with Derren Brown?

"in Just-
spring when the world is mud-
luscious the little
lame balloonman

whistles far and wee

and eddieandbill come
running from marbles and
piracies and it's
spring

when the world is puddle-wonderful

the queer
old balloonman whistles
far and wee
and bettyandisbel come dancing

from hop-scotch and jump-rope and

it's
spring
and

the

goat-footed

balloonMan whistles
far
and
wee"

The fount never "Google's"....as Google is the name of a corporation not an activity...the fount vacuums....and never says "cool"....control your language, control your life.

In reply to an earlier post on 18 Nov 2012 16:18:22 GMT
Ceres is also the name of a corporation...

In reply to an earlier post on 18 Nov 2012 16:50:11 GMT
and....?.....my point stands....control your language...don't let it control you.

In reply to an earlier post on 18 Nov 2012 16:52:34 GMT
I fail to see how words I have selected to type control me, infact I see it being the other way around if anything. innit.

In reply to an earlier post on 18 Nov 2012 17:28:45 GMT
Why do you use the word Google and not search?

Why do you use the word, (word) and not (mot)?

Language is arbitrary, it changes.

In reply to an earlier post on 18 Nov 2012 17:38:27 GMT
I have searched for the answers deep within my soul, 23 years later I still have no answers, I typed a word into google and approx 0.22 seconds later, I have a wealth of knowledge.

Everything is virtual Simon, perhaps you could try downloading sanity?

It?.....it.....no.....people change it....sadly unconsciously....so language devolves......

We need to take control of language...shape it...so we can create better semantic structures....more reflective of reality...

"We need to take control of language"

We do, that's why it changes.

"Is a jeet kune do straight blast virtual..?"

Yes, it exists only in your napper.

So, 21 post in - does anyone have any thoughts on the actual content of the programme?

In reply to an earlier post on 18 Nov 2012 20:45:22 GMT
So who decided to make the name Google become a verb?

In reply to an earlier post on 18 Nov 2012 20:46:47 GMT
No thoughts ....as the content is pure, neat, ****?!

No one person did. It was adopted as shorthand by many people, and thus became a verb. This is how language changes.
