gille liath says:
'I think therefore I am'. This is the declaration of an alienated being, in exile from his own spiritual depths, compelled to seek some comfort in a proof for his own existence (!) based on the observation that he "thinks". If his thought is necessary as a medium through which he arrives at the concept of his existence, then he is in fact only moving further away from his true being. He is reducing himself to a concept.

- Thomas Merton, New Seeds of Contemplation

SH asks, "What is your point?" A one track mind goes off the rails.

"Their lives and achievements are not judged solely on their depression surely?" Of course not but suicide more often than not occurs when the balance of the mind or the personality is disturbed.

Of course, what constitutes a persons achievements is often a matter of opinion. Personally I would not have included Heath Ledger, Nick Drake or Sara Teasdale but you probably have another opinion.

Incidentally I do know a lot about depression and attempted suicides.

M. Jolliff says:
A man who had studied much in the schools of wisdom finally died in the fullness of time and found himself at the Gates of Eternity.
An angel of light approached him and said "Go no futher , O mortal, until you have proven to me your worthinessto enter into Paradise!"
But the man answered, "Just a minute, now. First of all, can you prove to me this is a 'real Heaven' and not just the wishful fantasy of my disordered mind undergoing death?"
Befor the angel could reply, a voice from inside the gates shouted:
"Let him in -he's one of us!"

SH.

Not odd at all. I'm not strong on Shakepeare but your response does seem Much Ado About Nothing. In fact I'm inclined to suggest it's pointless, disingenuous, pedantic and evasive. Perhaps you should get a hobby but, if by any chance you are colour blind, don't take up snooker.
