I think that it comes from Luke 21:27.

"And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory." (Luke 21:27 KJV)

Many believers have a problem with the Ascension being symbolic or non-literal since such thinking might lead to the idea that the Resurrection was also only symbolic or non-literal. Such an idea is probably unacceptable to most Christians since the whole point of their religion is to gain a literal life after death.

Of coarse, a literal Ascension with Jesus becoming an astronaut is not without its difficulties either.

shame really as moving on to another plain of existence feels so much kinder to his memory than going up like a rocket or standing in a beam of light and ascending or just floating off like a helium balloon! if he wasn't coming back that way then where do i have this idea that he's coming back standing on a cloud from?

Sam Hunter says:
The dead from the time of Noah? Those would all of the people that God murdered. Presumably, Jesus was there to say "Sorry my dad killed you".

Nice thought, but the disciples watched him go UP in Acts 1 and were told not to look upwards because he wasn't going to come back that way.

Paul says he then went DOWN to talk to the dead from the time of Noah before returning to Heaven

well ascending is going upwards but ascension is more about a 'higher' level, plain of existence, spiritual enlightenment thing! so on the one hand one might imagine Jesus going up into the sky (towards Heaven) but on the other hand it didn't need to be up it could be more of a moving on to somewhere other than within our experience. i think it has been said somewhere that he will return on a cloud though so they were probably thinking of Heaven as being up above the sky.

No. It's trollery by a reluctant believer.

Where exactly did Jesus go at the ascension? The idea of Jesus flying up into outer space seems a bit strange.
