This was a great printer until it, like many of its like apparently, started to play up and will not turn on correctly. It just cycles between the start up logo and then turns itself off constantly. HP no real help cannot even find out if they have another printer which uses the 363 cartridge of which I have just bought a load for this printer. If anyone knows of another HP printer that uses the 363 cartridges please post on this forum and/or the HP help forum as many others in the same position. Many thanks.

You will find that this will be faulty capacitors on the main board and can be repaired for a few pounds. The capacitors that some HP printers used of this era have been found to be faulty - this problem affected a number of manufacturers not just HP.

This suggestion was made by someone else on the HP Forum. Do you have any idea on where to find instructions for carrying out this repair work? If this is a known problem, as it seems to be given the number of people posting about it, then why are HP completely ignoring it? Surely this should be a recall due to poor manufacturing quality. When working this was a great little printer, scanner and fax machine and more economical on ink than my Epsom Stylus SX 400.

Hi Woody,
From recollection, I removed the main board and saw that the capacitors (small barrel shaped components, similar to a small tin can measuring just under a centimetre tall had blown, I think they were green in colour with bright metal ends about 5mm in diameter) had blown. It's easy to identify them as they will have a confex end, on a good capicitor these would be flat. Having found these capacitors I was then able to google them to find out that they were of a faulty batch used by many different manufacturers for various products. The capacitors will have the rating on them and can be easily replaced if you are any good with a soldering iron, the replacements can be obtained from Tandy. If you don't feel confident find a local tv repair business or similar, I am sure they will do the work for very little. The main board is easy to remove and really only requires a Phillips screw driver.
The symptoms you describe are identical to the ones I had, I repaired in in under 30 mins including removal and reinsertion of the board.
Hope this helps?
Regards,
Tim
