Evening all, first off I'd like to give late credit for SJH for suggesting the World noms. I do urge people to check your noms (i.e. eligibility of said national. If they're a solo artist, they must be born in nommed country, if it's a band then it must contain 66.6% of nommed country).

Anyway, please now nom a song by an Irish artist/band, (Northern Ireland is next round). Noms open to everyone and end 9pm Thursday, cheers!

Gordon Dent says:
Only half of the Whiskey In The Jar line-up of Thin Lizzy were from the Republic of Ireland. The other half were from Northern Ireland.

Johnny Bee says:
Not even - Phil Lynott was born in West Bromwich and Eric Bell was born in Belfast. Only Brian Downey was born in the RoI.

Naughty Foe missed my nom. Can the person who 'tidies' Thin Lizzy re-instate it please?
Thanks.

Derek W. says:
Sorry, but having done some extensive research on Rory Gallagher band line-ups, I reckon that if you want to comply with the 66% rule you have to pick a track off either Rory Gallagher or Deuce, and that's based on my belief that Wilgar Campbell is SOuthern Irish.

As far as I can tell, all his other band line-ups wouldn't qualify, but please feel free to prove me wrong.

Didn't we say where it's an individual artist the backing band don't figure into it?

Derek W. says:
Hi RAB, way back when, The Foe posted - "Regarding solo singers and backing singers, I think we can go with the solo singer only, otherwise it's going to get too complicated."

I personally, wouldn't class Rory Gallagher as a 'solo singer', but others might. I guess we need a ruling from the man in charge:-)

easytiger says:
Gerry McAvoy was from Belfast, so if Rory then has a drummer from NI does he come under NI even though he was born in Donegal and raised in Cork?

Posted on 20 Feb 2013 09:24:45 GMT
easytiger says:
So much intermovement between NI and Eire perhaps it would have been better to do what the rugby team does: all the island.

Derek W. says:
Good question ET, it sounds daft I know, but we need a ruling from the man in charge I think Wilgar Campbell is Southern Irish, in which cas Rory qualifies for this round, but can't find any confirmation of that. Rod De'ath was welsh by the way so that lineup is definitely out, unless the ruling is that Rory counts as a 'solo singer', in which case he's in.

I reckon TheFoe's going to be wishing he'd never started this:-)

After Val,

Smoke And Strong Whiskey - Christy Moore
Tongue - Bell X1
The Island - Paul Brady
Bonnie Mulligan - Sharon Shannon
(Whiskey In The Jar - Thin Lizzy)
Bullfrog Blues - Rory Gallagher
Zombie - Cranberries
Surrender - U2
Celebrate - An Emotional Fish
Sing All Our Cares Away - Damien Dempsey
Feel So Different - Sinead O'Connor

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LoZqvMryMs

I am no expert on Rory Gallagher but as he records under his own name and writes the songs, surely his Irishness is what counts not where his backing band come from. It seems a bit like worrying about Bruce Springsteen being ok for a USA round if most of the E Street Band came from Swindon!
