Roll up, roll up for the 2014 AFL (Aussie Rules) season. Next Friday, March 14, will see the first bounce in one of the most physically exciting ball sports on the planet. Plenty of biffs and bumps and beefcake too - if that is your thing. For the third year running, the Pop Forum will host a tipping competition which requires no skill and no financial outlay. It is all in the name of fun and bragging rights.
As far as I know, returning participants (and the team and charity each is supporting) are:
Val - GWS Giants - Three Cups of Tea
RAB - Fremantle Dockers - Australian Children's Music Foundation
David E. - Brisbane Lions - The Song Room
Mark K. - Essendon Bombers - McGrath Foundation
TheFoe - Melbourne Demons - Hanover Welfare Services
Philip - Richmond Tigers - Canteen
Lez - St Kilda Saints - Alzheimer's Australia
SussexWelsh - West Coast Eagles - Save The Bilby Fund
Wharf - Hawthorn Hawks - Lifeline
Anita - Sydney Swans - The Mirabel Foundation
Sj Brooke (Steve) - North Melbourne Kangaroos - Swags for Homeless
techsergeant - Collingwood Magpies (charity to come)
RedJohn - Carlton Blues - Fr. Bob Maguire Foundation (if RedJohn isn't able to punt, he will receive the selections of a nominated sports journalist)
MC Zaptone - Geelong Cats - Edgar's Mission (MC still to confirm)
Blastro - Western Bulldogs - Zaidee's Rainbow Foundation (have emailed Blastro)
It would be great if we can pick up another three posters to devote themselves to the following teams:
Gold Coast Suns
Port Adelaide Power
FYI the 2014 home and away season will run for 23 rounds finishing on Friday, August 29th. That is followed by a four week Finals Season which culminates on Saturday September 27. Punting on the Finals Season is optional - it's just a chance to earn a bit more dosh for your charity. If summer hols are likely to be a problem, anyone can punt ahead for as many weeks as he/she wishes.
Remember, no skill is required,, nor any knowledge of the game. And there is no cost other than a few minutes of your time to submit tips each week and I do all the work.
There are 9 games each week All you have to do is predict the 9 winners, plus, for the first game of the round (usually played here on Friday night), you are asked to guess the winning margin i.e. the difference in points between the winning and losing teams.
I've asked each player to choose an Australian charity to play for and I give small donations based on the results.
