S.L. If you take the time to actually read the threads you will find out all kinds of surprising facts about The Monkees It certainly has taught me a thing or two, as have most subjects here. These forums are full of very knowledgable people who definitely know their music and like to discuss things in some detail, read them all from the start and be amazed.

Ps. I'm surprised and delighted that you know the cd Jim by Jamie Lidell, he has a beautiful voice doesn't he.

if you would have bothered to READ the threads you would see that I don't rate the Monkees but I don't go around calling everybody who likes them. It not just what yhou say its how you say it and you seem to have be a natural at rubbing people up the wrong way (I'm trying to be nice nere) Manners cost nothing as my mother used to say. You can make your point without being obnoxious. I don't know MC from adam other than on this forum same with Nugent, Butler and Martin but I respect there right to an opinion and although we may disagree over music I don't think we would stoop to childish name calling. Sit back read the threads (especially the rplys written by any of the above names and you may learn more about us we are all different(Martin is quite close and doesn't reveal too much about himself cagey that one)), count to ten before typing a reply, chill out man, you never know you may even learn something. Never forget us oldies have been there done that and got the tour T shirt.

As the Monkey's themselves put it 'The four Kings of EMI are lying, stately, on the floor' - so they knew their place, although at their peak the Monkees did outsell the beatles. The Monkees were artifically 'packaged' by TV company execs to compete with the Beatles, so they [the studios] actually ripped off the beatles. But within months a TV show about a band became a band in a TV show. Besides they both ripped off Lonnie Donegon and the Buddy Holly sound........ I like, well love actually, both The Monkees and The Beatles, have all their albums [now as LPs and CDs] but the sound quality [ie. technical support for recording/mixing] and consistency of the Beatles music [who wrote all their own songs] is rather in another league to the Monkees - with the possible exception of 'Stupid Scouse Git'. The Monkees scored with their really great zany TV show though.... I was 8 when The Monkees first aired and I instantly fell in love with it [it even starred Circus Boy!] .... Yesterday, when all my troubles seemed so far away..... OK, the Monkees aren't deep that often, so lets just enjoy paddling in shallows for a while. Does anyone rate Rolf Harris's cover of 'Smoke on the water' by the way.

Actually, it's 'Randy' not 'Stupid'. Yes, I quite like Rolf's rendition of 'Smoke on the Water', especially the jazzy bassline.

But the Monkees led this really cool and humuros life and let cameras in to record in the first ever reality show what a funny life they led. You don't see the beatles (even now) doing that eh?

That's true, I'm forgetting my Alf Garnett Catchphrases [it's 'Stupid Boy' from Dads Army]. Possibly I preferred "The Alternate Title" anyway. Actually the Beatles did record their life [kind-of] a tad earlier than the Monkees in their film 'A hard days Night'..........with Wilfred Bramble as Paul McCartney's granddad..... The film is often quoted as an influence on The Monkees [although the Monkees show creator says he toured with a struggling young band back in 1962 and got the idea then]....

I met Micky Dolenz back in the 80's...I'm a Prop man in films/t.v and did a bit of work on that stupid robot programme he was involved in back then....to be honest I was more impressed with meeting Irene Handl..star!
