Ok boys 'n' girls, get those pop hats back on for our next round. Please nominate a pop song from any era since pop began, taking care not to stray into the core of... shall we say more stern and serious genres.
Noms close 10pm Thursday

Liq I've dropped our names from the 3 minute thread titles - just seems a lot tidier to me. Hope you don't mind? ;-)

Of course I don't mind Al. Besides, these threads belong to all the good folk of the Amazon Fellowship. Welcome one and welcome all.

Totally agree with that - come to think of it, I don't think we actually asked to be there anyway did we? Just made us the fall guys to look after it...and it worked! ;-)

Brass Neck says:
Lush at least has light breathy female vocals which makes it more borderline IMO but you're right in that neither are particularly poppy but MBV just gives the finger to the whole notion!

Not my thread though so it's up to Liq

Johnny Bee says:
Very poppy if you ask me. Just cause Kevin Shields and chums are known for their distorted noise rock, doesn't mean that they can't do skewed pop as well. Same with the JMC, who released some great pop singles. What's the difference between this and the Kinks, who are often called the precursor to heavy metal with 'All Day And All Of The Night' and 'You Really Got Me'?

Taking wiki's generalisation:-

As a genre, pop music is very eclectic, often borrowing elements from other styles including urban, dance, rock, Latin and country; nonetheless, there are core elements which define pop. Such include generally short-to-medium length songs, written in a basic format (often the verse-chorus structure), as well as the common employment of repeated choruses, melodic tunes, and catchy hooks.

IMO there's a few nudging hard at the outer bounds of pop, and totally missing the 'catchy hooks', in this list!! But that's what opinion is all about guys....and if you ain't got a definite in the first place (and we've been kicking this thing around for a long while now) then it's damned hard to abide by it!

Agree with Johnny. The MBV track qualifies in my book. Prominent electric guitar doesn't necessarily constitute out and out rock. Much depends on the complexity of the arrrangement and this one is relatively simple, coupled with a vocal delivery that's languorously unexaggerated. Sound pop credentials. It stays.

As does Lush :-)
