I'm making a soundtrack for a friends university film project at the moment using both protest and patriotic style songs about war.

I have tracked down a fairly large body of music already but I'd like to hear your suggestions too. Folk/Rock/Metal/Rap/Pop. Anything really, as long as it has words.

I plan to listen to all the examples then pick out around 12 for the project.

Thanks in advance for your ideas.

Mike.

Not quite war - as in contemporary war - but my first thoughts on seeing your request was to try Buffy St Marie and Soldier Blue - it has somewhat poingnant lyrics considering what's going on in the world at the moment. (Soldier Blue : Best Of The Vanguard Years) but having reviewed the lyrics on line - they have been edited from the record that I remember. Notwithstanding that - 'Overture' from Tommy by The Who, or Machine Gun by Jimi Hendrix may be half decent starting points.

The Band Played Waltzing Matilda. The version by June Tabor is probably the most affecting I've heard. The Pogues' version isn't half bad either.

Nena - 99 Red Balloons
Scorpions -Wind of Change

Don't particular like either, but they're both relevant

War Crimes by the Specials (tho I think they called themselves Special AKA by that time). It's on youtube; harrowing protest against the Sabra and Chatila massacres after Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon. Its Middle Eastern music helps convey the horror.
For the Nortern Ireland Troubles, try the Fun Boy 3's 'The More I See, The Less I Believe' and Police's 'Invisible Sun', whose video draws from contemporary news reports.
Billy Joel's epic 'Goodnight Saigon' is narrated by a US soldier in Vietnam.
I don't htink Dire Straits' 'Brothers In Arms' relates to any specific war, but it's very moving.
I forget who wrote War (protest vs the American War in Vietnam), but Bruce Springsteen does a great live version on Live 1975-85.

another couple from Vietnam's American War:
>'The Battle Hymn of Lt Calley' - referring to th eofficre in charge of the My Lai massacre. I forget who idid this, but it was a top 20 hit circa 1970-1
> Staff Sgt Barry Sadler's 1966 'Ballad of the Green Berets' represents teh silent majority's early support for the war. Sadler was a Green Beret who made this proud song America's 2d biggest hit single of the '60s (after I Want to hold your hand), topping the chart for 5 weeks and selling over 4 million
>The Beatles' Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill, from the White Album, was their protest about the war in Vietnam
>Stiff Little Fingers' 'Suspect Device' and the Angelic Upstarts' 'Last Night Another Soldier' (early new wave, circa 1979) ocncerned the N Ireland Troubles
>Billy Joel again: 'Leningrad' is about US and Russian kids growing up and going inot their rival armies

Filter's most recent album Anthems For The Damned and most of the songs thereon deal quite a bit with the effects of the Iraq War...
