Hi folks,

Roll up, roll up for the 2014 AFL (Aussie Rules) season. Next Friday, March 14, will see the first bounce in one of the most physically exciting ball sports on the planet. Plenty of biffs and bumps and beefcake too - if that is your thing. For the third year running, the Pop Forum will host a tipping competition which requires no skill and no financial outlay. It is all in the name of fun and bragging rights.

As far as I know, returning participants (and the team and charity each is supporting) are:

Val - GWS Giants - Three Cups of Tea
RAB - Fremantle Dockers - Australian Children's Music Foundation
David E. - Brisbane Lions - The Song Room
Mark K. - Essendon Bombers - McGrath Foundation
TheFoe - Melbourne Demons - Hanover Welfare Services
Philip - Richmond Tigers - Canteen
Lez - St Kilda Saints - Alzheimer's Australia
SussexWelsh - West Coast Eagles - Save The Bilby Fund
Wharf - Hawthorn Hawks - Lifeline
Anita - Sydney Swans - The Mirabel Foundation
Sj Brooke (Steve) - North Melbourne Kangaroos - Swags for Homeless
techsergeant - Collingwood Magpies (charity to come)
RedJohn - Carlton Blues - Fr. Bob Maguire Foundation (if RedJohn isn't able to punt, he will receive the selections of a nominated sports journalist)
MC Zaptone - Geelong Cats - Edgar's Mission (MC still to confirm)
Blastro - Western Bulldogs - Zaidee's Rainbow Foundation (have emailed Blastro)

It would be great if we can pick up another three posters to devote themselves to the following teams:

Gold Coast Suns
Port Adelaide Power
Adelaide Crows

FYI the 2014 home and away season will run for 23 rounds finishing on Friday, August 29th. That is followed by a four week Finals Season which culminates on Saturday September 27. Punting on the Finals Season is optional - it's just a chance to earn a bit more dosh for your charity. If summer hols are likely to be a problem, anyone can punt ahead for as many weeks as he/she wishes.

Remember, no skill is required,, nor any knowledge of the game. And there is no cost other than a few minutes of your time to submit tips each week and I do all the work.

There are 9 games each week All you have to do is predict the 9 winners, plus, for the first game of the round (usually played here on Friday night), you are asked to guess the winning margin i.e. the difference in points between the winning and losing teams.

I've asked each player to choose an Australian charity to play for and I give small donations based on the results.

Any takers?

tech - let me know what kind of charity you favour - e.g the homeless, feeding the hungry, children, animal welfare, various illnesses/disabilities - and I will either choose one on your behalf or give you a choice.

Some possible suggestions are:

Support Act -
Second Bite -
Sacred Heart Mission -
Loreto Vietnam -

Some participants have taken up my suggestions, others have found their own preferred charity to support.

Round 1 is spread over 10 days purely for dramatic effect (can't think of any other reason). If punters could lodge their tips by midnight THURSDAY March 13 (your time) it would be a great help, although I can accept them up until 8.45am FRIDAY (your time) if absolutely necessary. You will need to tip which team will win from the following games:

Friday, March 14
Collingwood Magpies v Fremantle Dockers (in Melbourne)

Saturday, March 15
GWS Giants v Sydney Swans (in Sydney)
Gold Coast Suns v Richmond Tigers (on the Gold Coast)

Sunday, March 16
Carlton Blues v Port Power (in Melbourne)

Thursday, March 20
Geelong Cats v Adelaide Crows (in Geelong)

Friday, March 21
North Melbourne Kangaroos v Essendon Bombers (in Melbourne)

Saturday, March 22
Hawthorn Hawks v Brisbane Lions (in Tasmania)
St Kilda Saints v Melbourne Demons (in Melbourne)

Sunday, March 23
West Coast Eagles v Western Bulldogs (in Perth)

PLUS, for the first game of the round, i.e. Magpies v Dockers, you will have to predict how many points the winning team will win by. You are not predicting how many points they will score, but the points difference between the winners & losers. So you will have to tip one of those sides to beat the other by x points - this number could be anything between 1 and 190 (the AFL's highest ever margin to date).

You can submit your tips on this thread any time between now and the first bounce (8.45am FRIDAY).

A draw will count as a win for both teams. Anyone who does not get their tips in before each week's deadline will score one less than the lowest tipster's score - e.g. if the lowest tipster gets 3 out of 9 winners, the person who didn't submit their tips will score 2.

And it's okay to tip the same teams as another (or more) tipsters - the margin of the first game of each round will separate us on the ladder.

Good punting everyone!

thankyou, val, i would prefer to be linked to a charity involved in the welfare of dogs, if that would be possible.

My dog was called Oscar. Unfortunately we had to say goodbye last year, diabetes and cataracts became too much for him.

it's still an awful thing to have to do.

tech - Oscar's Law is yours (another dog-lover here - we have a 10 year old German shorthaired pointer who came from the RSPCA and has been a total joy; she filled the gap left by a foxhound, who filled the shoes of two Jack Russells, who etc. etc. I can't imagine not having a dog in my life)

Wharfy - thanks for being first cab off the rank

Blastro - welcome back aboard

RedJohn says:
Hi Val, I think you know that I am 'hors de combat' and my focus now has to be concentrated on other matters. Therefore I'm unable to commit to punting this season. I thoroughly enjoyed last year and I will try to drop in occasionally to check on progress.

Let me take this this opportunity to thank and applaud you for your hard work, devotion and generosity to all of the very worthy and deserving causes that you support.

Good luck everyone.

No problems Anita. Hopefully it's a case of great minds thinking alike.

Or maybe, fools seldom differ.

Hi RedJohn - I know I speak for all of us when I say our thoughts are with you and we all hope the fight is going well. My thoughts re the 2014 season are that I'll keep you in the competition and give you the selections of one of the media tipsters each week. Unfortunately, I don't think this will make you an automatic winner as our group has some amazing results (see, ignorance does have its rewards). However, it does mean your charity is in there with a chance of earning some dosh. And, of course, if you do want to punt now and again, we will be delighted to see you. So take care, concentrate on what needs to be done and know we are all behind you.
