I can see you now Brassy. Body-hugging shirt with the big, rounded lapels. And the shoes!! Platforms like Elton's?

You do realise that if you had kept some of this clobber you could have donated it to your local museum.

Brass Neck says:
Mum held off allowing me to have platforms - 'yer'll break yer neck lad', I seem to remember that 'football' cardigans were the in thing along with shirts with penny round or even jumbo collars with repetitive printed designs (in cheapo sweaty poly fabrics) and I think 'pods' were the footwear of choice with a square toe which had a pronounced ridge above the toes (like they'd been in a collision at speed!). Mum also banned Doc Martins - 'yer'll get yer 'ead kicked in by skin'eads lad' so I got to uni and went straight out and bought some along with a tin of oxblood polish! I was a repressed child!

So 'glam rock' isn't really rock and neither is Billy Idol. Why not just call the thread 'Whatever You Think You Can Get Away With' ;-)

T. Franklin says:
Put glam next to the rock contemporaries, such as Purple, Sabbath, Zeppelin, ELP, Yes, Hawkwind, Free etc and tell me which side of the fence you'd put them on JB.

Even with a band like the Sweet who straddled the fence, compare their album tracks with the Chinni-Chap A-sides, or even compare the self-penned B-sides of the singles with the As. There's an ocean of difference musically and (possibly more importantly) lyrically. Whereas pop generally has either throw away quality or certainly nothing deeper than love ditties, rock more normally has a more serious (or pretentious, depending on viewpoint) or adult attitude to lyrical content.

Billy Idol is perhaps pop-rock rather than pop or "rawk"

Johnny Bee says:
Why would I do that, TF? The bands you list are already classified as heavy rock; blues rock or (gulp) prog rock. Some of the best rock tunes have childish or banal lyrics and there's loads of intelligent pop tunes. And if Idol's pop-rock, then he ain't 'purely pop,' is he.

All I'm saying is that a number of the tracks on here aren't exactly in the spirit of the thread, mines included.

If I was in charge anything pre 1980 would be banned! El problemo solvedo. In fact I'd maybe make it later than that...cut out a few of those Blondie noms there'd be likely to be. :0)

Love that one, PB.

Spacepig says:
Problem is Collette, if you do that you instantly lose about half of the posters. I for one would really struggle to name a pop song from the '80's onwards.

Plenty of pop around at the moment, Spacepig.

Spacepig says:
Very possible LL, very likely in fact. But, as pop doesn't interest me, and I never listen to the radio, hardly ever watch TV, drink only in pubs that play music I like and don't read any music mags apart from Classic Rock, I, thankfully, am not exposed to it.
In all honesty, I could not name a single song that has been in the charts for at least 5 years. I might have heard snippets of some when out shopping or whatever, but I sure couldn't name any of them. I did look up the charts one time a while back, and didn't recognise a single name in them, so I never bothered looking again. The way I look at it, if there is good music out there, it will find me, I don't feel the need to check what is the biggest sellers, because as you may have noticed, my tastes don't exactly coincide with the masses.

And sst, I can assure you, there is a lot more than my short term memory shot, where did the last 30 years go for starters?

As a side note, I had an interesting experience today. For the first time ever I had acupuncture. A very strange sensation, lying on a bed with needles sticking in you while Enigma plays in the background. Wonder how I get myself into these strange situations?

Spacepig says:
Whaddya talkin' 'bout TheFoe? She is worse than me! If it's not Oingo Boingo, The Union, Ozzy era Sabbath or Alex Harvey then according to her it ain't worth bothering with. Well, unless it's pre 1970's jazz that is.

Er, shouldn't this one be finished now and voting open? Whose thread is this, Neph's or Mondo's or Brassy's? Not mine surely unless I was really super super drunk last night (wait a minute, I was).
