I didn't think a question such as that would concern you, what with nations not existing and all ... ;)

No

Yes. Just for Tim's education, the UK comprises Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) and Northern Ireland. As Northern Ireland competitors are on our team it is the UK not GB.

M. Williams-

Thank you! I have been wondering about the difference. My uneducated "no" vote was totally random. I change my vote!

Correct, the Michael Caine award is in the post. One other thing, geographically/geologically these lumps of rock off the european coast are known as The British Isles to the dismay of my Irish friends-sorry but it's true.

no, great britain comprises england , scotland wales and northern ireland as does the uk but crucially it comprises isle of man but uk doesnt, hence mark cavendish racing for britain

your vote was correct .....no need to change

rock n wrong....why is the country called....the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland?

In reply to an earlier post on 6 Aug 2012 19:11:41 BDT
there is no country called the united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland ....

The Kingdom of Great Britain resulted from the political union of the kingdoms of England and Scotland with the Acts of Union 1707 on 1 May 1707 under Queen Anne. In 1801, under a new Act of Union, this kingdom merged with the Kingdom of Ireland to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. After the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921) most of Ireland seceded from the Union, which then became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The One says:
GB = England , Wales, Scotland, Isle of Wight, Anglesey, Isles of Scilly, Hebrides, and Orkney and Shetland
UK = GB and Northern Ireland

For the purpose of Olympic we enter as UK but compete under the name of GB....

Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Mann are not part of GB or UK but Crown Dependencies hence the head of state is Queen Elizabeth......also not part of the EU....lucky for them.....also they are not sovereign nations.

Now since they are not sovereign nations but Crown Dependencies....Mark Cavendish represent GB. However in the Commonwealth Games there is no team GB....each countries represent themselves. i.e. Scotland , Wales, England, NI and most crucially Isle of Mann and therefore Mark Cavendish represent Isle of Mann.

Hopefully this is clear enough.

In reply to an earlier post on 6 Aug 2012 23:09:39 BDT
Agreed, but to be pedantic surely Mark Cavendish comes from Isle of Man.

The One,

'Hopefully this is clear enough.'

Crystal clear. Now explain the rules of the cycling Omnium, cos I'm completely baffled.

It seems that silver and bronze are just as worthy as Gold. Talk about politics and BS. Why compete if one does not want to win? Silver, my left nut. Gold is the aim. not silver..Tonight a gymanist was praised for getting bronze, even though she screwed up her landing from the uneven bars...The "US" philosophy; be all you can be! Unless you are China! =)
