Without a shadow of a doubt - over rated, over hyped MIND NUMBINGLY BORING sequence of events.I watch the TV ---- Olympics (thanks proctor and gamble)
I go to work ----- Visa sponsor the flaming olympics so everyone is mad about it... WHY????? It is the single most dull global sporting event there is ----- PERSPECTIVE ----- I'd rather watch golf.

Anyone tell me any benefits of this global farce?

Sou'Wester says:
Trouble is that what started as a good idea with high principles has been turned into an over-hyped, over-commercialised travesty. I'm already sick and tired of the whole business but take comfort in the thought that it will all be over in a few weeks.
(Sadly, however, we'll be paying for it all for many years to come).

"over-commercialised travesty" - SW, any figures for cost so far?

Popcorn, Nasty. 11 bn over eight years. The government gets through 1.5 times that much of our money every single week, year-in-year out. It needs to be stopped.

100% agree Pop.....total waste of time and money!

Public services I'll pay for, Jobseekers I'll pay for, NHS I'll pay for, Decent transport network I'll pay for, libraries, schools, raod works you name it I'm happy to pay taxes for.
An event I won't be attending and generally think is wrong in that its just a celebration of pride and NOTHING more (oooh I can throw this metal ball further than you, that means my country is better than yours!!!)

Time to privatise the Olympics, sell Simon Cowell the franchise.

I feel your anger though Gordon. Greed will be an ever present factor in any government where individuals are given power, tis human nature.

A. Harman says:
We are invited to believe that the Olympics will create a 'legacy' - but why not just spend the money on affordable social housing, worthwhile infrastructure projects like schools and hospitals to stimulate the construction industry straight away, without bothering to host the sporting event? And save all the money wasted on 'security'.
If the Olympics is so likely to provoke terrorism so that it is necessary to deploy missiles and battleships around London, then surely it is a security risk that should be avoided!

"If the Olympics is so likely to provoke terrorism so that it is necessary to deploy missiles and battleships around London, then surely it is a security risk that should be avoided!" - Should and could.

"but why not just spend the money on affordable social housing, worthwhile infrastructure projects like schools and hospitals to stimulate the construction industry straight away" - Exactly, the logical idea.

Was it Athens who hosted the last olympics? Olympic legacy enough to save Greece from folding under financial pressure?

Does anyone remeber being asked if they supported the olmpic host bid??? Was there ever a vote to say whether we host it or not??? Democracy??? Our money being used????

Molly Brown says:
Does that include all the "kickbacks"?

Molly Brown says:
Good job it's being shown for free on taxpayer funded television whilst Gordon sips on his Spanish bubbly. He doesn't have SKY television apparently, just blue skies and parasols.
