The Olympics seems to be more a military operation than an athletic competition. There is something seriouslywrong with a society which complains about the "inconvenience" of having SAMs (ie; Surface to Air Missiles) placed on their rooftops rather than demanding an end to this long-running so-called "War on Terror".

Given that our current terrorist problem have a certain amount of form for driving aircraft into things the security forces would be criminally irresponsible not to take some kind of precautions.
As to an end to the "so called War on Terror" ... how would you propose doing that? Both sides have to want a war to end before you have a chance of stopping it - we didn't want this one to start and they don't want it to end, so we're just going to have to put up with the inconvenience, aren't we?

Doctor: in the last decade since 9/11, and since the murder of Bin Laden, there have been no significant terrorist attacks on the West. Your government if conditioning you into fearing a threat which does not exist. Why? Because it wants to moniter your communications, hol secret trials and gain support for extending its reach into oil-rich countries. A SAM on your roof will no doubt increase your prejudice against Islam. There is no threat to the Olympics because the Olympics involves even Muslim nations and observers. A terrorist attack will occur, if anywhere, against specific national teams, not against the world in general.

More people in your society are killed by nationals every year, for non-political and non-religious reasons, than have ever been killed by terrorist attack.

There have, however, been several significant terrorist attacks thwarted. I am well aware that the State continues to misuse the threat of terrorist attacks for its own ends, but that does not mean that that threat is not real. I do not share your confidence that the presence of mohammedans at the games somehow renders them protected from jihadi attack - whilst specific national teams are almost certainly at increased risk, the terror value of a prestige target attack should not be underestimated, both to demonstrate the power of the terrorist organisation in question and for the loss of face that the UK would be expected to suffer for failing to protect the games.
And I would be most surprised if a SAM on my roof could increase my prejudice against mohammedanism, because I'm pretty sure that that's not possible.

Doctor: Remember the IRA? England did not resort to the extremes it currently adopts. And the IRA were a real threat, a genuine army operating within the UK borders. (If it were not for the sudden wake-up call experienced by Thatchers government, that particular war may still be going on...) There is no way fundamentalist Islam represents a "threat" to the West. Our kids, attending school and camps, are being shot by psychos produced by us, not Islam...

Spin, keep calm and think positive:

provides the wonderful Beeb with lots of 'stories'...rubber speed boats roaring along the Thames...nice

it's all good fun,

adds interest to the build up,

provides training exercises for our brave boys and girls,

less expensive and dangerous than sending them to Afghanistan to play with their SAMs,

Keeps the great UKdonkeyland public anxious, and feeling safe simultaneously,

those troops will help the local takeaways when they send out for snap,

and you enjoy moaning about it.

Doctor: The IRA were "moderately dangerous" =) Unlike the fools fighting for their "beliefs" today, the IRA had defined goals, defined tactics and defined morality. Now one may disagree with those, but my point is that todays "terrorists" have no defined goal, tactic or morality. The west cannot win this war, but nor can the terrorists. Why/ Because, in truth, nothing substantial or relevent is being fought for. The current "Terrorism" attracts any Tom, Dick or Mary who has a grudge against the West. If you see what I mean..

the terrorists can't win this war in time they might out number the west

only way to win is get rid of the delusions in the beliefs of the invisible friends

or even what would happen if hackers downed the net or power think about the riots and looting and death

Yeah, there's nothing more stupid and ignorant than comparing al Qaeda etc to the IRA, for a myriad of reasons. There's no way you could imagine them ever having hijacked planes and flown them into civilian targets as per 9/11 - which is what these missiles will be there to prevent.

I must say, though: siting them on council flats is one thing, but it's a bit rum putting them on top of 'private residences'. What's the world coming to - and what will happen to property prices? I think the Daily Mail should tell us.

Spin, Never, we don't do takeaways in this house, everything is home cooked, just like in the good old days.

And I bet your a great cook

People in this modern society just eat junk or go for the oven chips we are losing the basic skill of healthy home cooked food

doctor_jeep seems to have comprehensively demolished the OP's point of view on just about every misguided point they want to make, but as an example of how ill thought out the points generally are:

'There is no threat to the Olympics because the Olympics involves even Muslim nations and observers. A terrorist attack will occur, if anywhere, against specific national teams, not against the world in general.'

This makes no sense - even if specific teams were targeted, this would in itself be a threat to the Olympics and would justify increased security.

As an aside, Islamic extremists have not previously differentiated between Muslims and non-muslims in their terrorist attacks (London, Madrid, 7/11) so there is no reason to think they will necessarily confine their attacks to non-Muslims in the future.

You also have no idea what kind of intelligence the security services are reacting to in deploying SAMs, so I find it hard to see how you justify your position.
