What's happened to Richmond?

Driving through Richmond Park used to be a pleasure. Now the roads are packed full of poncy cyclists. The town itself seems to be full of Tristrans, Abigails and lots of Lord Ponceby Smythyes....the GOMS remember the good old days.

Some people might yearn for the days when you could do 100mph on the A30 in an open-top car with starter lever, but what can you do about it?

Posted on 12 Jan 2014 09:54:54 GMT
I suppose you could end up encouraging so many cyclists that they cause the congestion.

Glad to see you are working on paradox.

The GOMS detects a slight 'air' of sarcasm from El spinnos.

If you take a look at house prices in the area, not to mention possible the highest council tax rates in the London area you will realize that only the 'Tristrans, Abigails and lots of Lord Ponceby Smythyes' can afford to live there.

Gentrification Gomsy, are you thinking of moving there, one bed flat on Richmond Rd, £300k.

The GOMS enjoys the cliffs.

I don't know what you mean exactly, Richmond out of rush hour is still a fantastic park and the riverside walk to Ham and the tiny ferry across to Orleans House and past the folly and on to Twickenham is still one of life's little pleasures. I can only imagine that you must only see it during rush hour or at weekends.
Richmond Park and the towpath walk to Kingston Bridge and Hampton Court are almost completely empty from 11am through to 4:30 weekdays. You can have it practically to yourself.
As for the residents, well it has always been well-heeled in parts but still has a good cross section of society and some decent back road pubs, if you know where to go.

Agreed. Kingston, where I have spent many years, seems to be unique in its mix of society. On Kingston Hill for example which backs onto Richmond Park, interspersed with the detached £multi-million houses you have Cumberland House and King's Nympton, both social housing estates. It's not all knobs, just very civilised. Society here seems to revolve around 'manners' and it doesn't matter which strata of society you belong to.

Yes, I'd have to say the OP is talking out of his beer glass. Obviously likes commenting without the aid of knowledge. As for the social generalisation, much of London's suburbs are in the process of gentrification, some of it horrible but much of it for the better.
It's a myth that the locals aren't able to afford to continue living in these areas as most have social housing and the mixture of shops reflects that.
The reality is that when people have lived in simple dwellings for most of their lives and suddenly they are offered £400K for it, they can't get their hands out of their pockets fast enough.
It makes me laugh when people say "it's not like it used to be, all the boozers are closing and it's full of posh eateries" that's not because of any social mobility, it's down to you lot all shopping here online and supermarkets with their dodgy pricing policies.

Yeh, lucky buggers. Just like Weybridge. Always wanting extensions, roofs te-slating, triple garages re-felting, swimming pools, patios, new luxury bathrooms, thier gardens doing and thier windows cleaned. Yeh they've got that much bloody money they usually pay well and on time. Shouldn't be allowed this non-government redistribution of wealth. Frackn disgrace it is.
