Yes although it will never happen, Blair and Bush should be tried as well, both as bigger war criminals then many that have been tried, but this will never happen either.

I don't pretend to know about the Falklands in depth, I am a 23 year old student who didn't live during that period and haven't read extensively on it.

Although it appears that many people in my exact position were quite well versed on it and were organising protests in the street. I didn't realise that you could learn so much about international relations through Morrissey records, episodes of Russell Howard and listening to a heavy set bearded bloke with seemingly random badges symbolising opposing (but radical) viewpoints all over his dirty anorak outside the student union selling newspapers.

I do know a little bit about it though, it turns out that a military dictatorship illegally invaded an island with a native population living there for purely selfish reasons, completely disregarding their right to self-determination, and the British government - under the rule of Thatcher at the time - deployed troops in the region to avert what could possibly have been an incredibly severe humanitarian crisis that could have seen the butchering of many innocent civilians.

However those aforementioned students told me that was actually an immoral act, and we should have just left them to be ruled by an authoritarian and unaccountable dictatorship or worse left them to be slaughtered like pigs because the land is closer and that and geographical location is far more important than humanitarianism.

I could have tried to make the sarcasm more subtle but it's been a long day.

Hi Yorkshireman, yes that is right, Blair and his acquiescence to the illegal invasion of and brutal military campaigns against Iraq was responsible for the deaths of literally millions of people - mostly children due to the bombing of the infastructure throughout the late 90s which led to widespread poverty.

But that's okay because he is Labour and says he's more left-wing n that. Left-wing is the right wing, and right-wing is, well, probably racist or sumfin. Labour might butcher millions but they do give college students 30 a week, and that makes them much nicer people in my eyes, and I am left-wing so therefore morally righteous.

Really, when you think about it, sinking the Belgrano was nothing compared to what Churchill did.

Are you thinking of Carne (is that how you spell it) or Market garden perhaps ? Strictly on the subject, both huge mistakes by Churchill, but mistakes made in wartime nonetheless. I am not persuaded that a troop ship (troops are ground forces) should be sailing the high seas unless there is an agenda. Belgrano was hit on the distinct probability that it was not looking for somewhere to do a spot of fishing.

No, I'm thinking of, for example, the Bismarck, or all the German aircrew shot down over London, etc etc etc etc.

If we're going to criticize Mrs Thatcher for ordering the sinking of an enemy warship while that enemy was at war with us, we really ought to be consistent. (I suppose that for our leftwing friends, though, the fact that Mr Churchill was allied to that nice Mr Stalin made all the difference.)
