"The fall-out over these compensation payments in their millions, if not billions, has not resulted in prosecutions, quite the opposite, the taxpayer is further funding the banks so they can meet their obligations in misleading customers into buying products they did not need or want. Now I would call that corruption, what would you call it?" - PPI is actually very useful nowadays, though many people were mis-sold it, this was down to the individual salesperson scoring for a bit commission as opposed to corrupt banks wanting themselves (Gas and electricity telesales are the same, in a sales centre I used to work at, pre pay consumers were targeted as we were able to sign up the customer without them even knowing. Many people did this to hit sales targets to win unreasonable prizes like cash and holidays.) It is the sales industry you need to target to stop this kind of thing happening.
As for race, I thought race was just the colour of your skin. But I suppose race covers more fields now.

I think we have to be very careful about making sweeping comments about any group of individuals. I never thought I'd be defending politicians but it's actually not true to claim that ALL our MPs are corrupt, or that ALL bankers are crooks etc. Yes, there are out and out bad eggs to be found there (as there always have been and as you'll probably find in any profession); there are many more who've not exactly been prescient but that's not the same as being corrupt. Apropos the financial crisis, we're all treating bankers like pariahs now, but there was nowhere near as much protest when the "good times were rolling" and people from all walks of life were happy to travel on the gravy train until it derailed. The danger in all this is that we become too cynical and too distrustful, and view every attempt by business, banks or parliament to get us out of this mess as a self-serving con. Yes, we need to exercise a reasonable degree of scepticism, but we also need to accept that within these maligned fields there are in fact many genuine, hard-working individuals who are not just "in it" for themselves.

Good post SW, and well said. I, for one, am going to try really hard not to make any such sweeping generalisations, or even agreeing with others that do. I think it's high time that we all started trusting again, and perhaps even hugging our fellow citizens, politicians and bankers, in the same way we all should have participated in this big society thing of "hugging a hoodie". Perhaps, the riots would never have happened if we had? After all, everyone just wants to be loved really, yes, even bankers. David Cameron will be very proud of us all. :-)

I guess racism, injustice and inequality are only terms recognised by the superior west? Only the White man can define and dictate what is right and wrong for all races in the world. Racism? Please. You would not know racism if it kicked your arse.

Back to the point: If you guys think politics is based solely on representing the "little man", dream on. Your money and labour supports these people. You act surprised only because you do not have the cahomies to change your system. Moan, complain and demand action; but do nothing. Why? Because you, like them, are on the same level.

The West values ideals, not actions. Tell people what you believe, but act otherwise. And then make excuses the fools will believe...

Update:

"Peter Cruddas, the former Tory treasurer, has been cleared of breaching donation laws by the Electoral Commission. The Commission said they found "no evidence to support the allegations and will not be opening an investigation into the matter"."

Yeah, right, and in that case, and by those standards, Rupert Murdoch is a fit and proper person to run a global media corporation.
