Hi W.A.E,
I live in UK, have done all my life and was born only one mile from where I live now. I have a friend Gisella who says that Germany is far better, but she lives here with her ex army husband.
Re your friend's pain killers: I presume that the painkillers she is addicted to are codiene based, so I think she could try cutting a little from a tablet each 'week' as I suggested to my friend. Then could replace one of the tablets with paracetamol. Then when the offending medication has been reduced enough just replace with paracetamol. Either way she needs to drink gallons of water and up her intake of vitamins, like Zinc, Cod Liver Oil, Q10, Echinacea and Primrose. it will depend on why she was given the strong painkillers in the first place, as to whether she might do without them altogether, once she's reduced the intake. Good luck to her. God bless.
Regards

Replacing codeine with paracetamol won't do anything, they are entirely different and have a different effect on the body (which is why you can double dose on them). There are 2 ways to break a dependancy, either gradually lower the dose until you get to nothing or cold turkey, personnally I think cold turkey is far more effective if harder.

Drinking loads of water and uping her vitamins intake won't help with beating a codeine addiction, although it is good general advice.

M. E. Phelan says:
Hi Andy,
Thanks for the info.
I only suggested the paracetamol as a replacement for the pain kill effect, and wasn't meaning that upping vitamins would beat the addiction, only that they would increase the strength of her 'soldiers' to fight the addiction, and help her feel healthier and more 'vital.'
Are you a GP by any chance?

Echinacea is a good shout for increasing the immune system, the others are primarily energy based vitamins, Co-Q 10 probably the most effective of them. The best combination for your immune system is echinacea and vitamin C, when taken together they reduce your chance of catching a cold by about 80%.

No I'm not a GP but I do work in the healthcare field, I work for the company that invented Ibuprofen (unfortunately can't name them due to an obscure rule that means anything I said they could consider me making a statement on policy). I currently work specifically with over the counter medicines but have worked with vitamins and complentary medicines in the past.

Hi MEP - an interesting post, but just one question -
why were you "given amphet on prescription many years ago" ?

EDIT: I've read further down the thread and see that the reason was for weight loss. So now my question is - why were you needing to lose weight when as you say "Prior to doing speed I had a body to die for and looked like a model" ?

Hi WAE. Hitched through Germany years ago and lived for a while in Dortmund. Travelled a lot down the Rhine valleys and in Bavaria. Did a bit of the grape harvesting. Lovely bits of country. Found the people very friendly.

Am gonna post all in one instead of several in a row ... soooo...

Hip hop concerts in Germany ? I'm not too sure, not a big hip hop fan myself - think there are a few but the only festivals I know of really are Rock Am Ring and such

Depending how long your friend has been away from Germany, if she goes back now she might not think it's better - it's certainly gone downhill in the past 10/15 years (all my own opinion of course) =)
My friend won't really listen - hard to persuade someone to stop who doesn't think they're doing anything wrong/addicted.

Andy, you say you can't name the pharmaceutical company, but really I think you're a spy which is why you can't say anything lol This is the conspi .. oh wait no, it IS the politics forum.

Ahh Dortmund, only down the road from where I live. True some of the country is lovely - some of the towns/cities not so; just like every country though I guess. I think it depends where you go on how the people are. The town I live in has high standards of itself (it likes to think it's more than it is) - got the most millionaires in the county or something like that so they tend to treat us common folk like a pest in their expensive (albeit small and not that much of a) town. But I have met some really nice people, the nicer Germans seem to be the ones who spend time with the English here (maybe it's just wishful thinking that Brits have a good effect on people lol).

Andy: Indeed, and thank god! Imagine a society of fat coke-heads. They would not only take up two seats, they'd fight you for them. =)

Very good Spin, that raised a chuckle. Unfortunately I'm now getting some funny looks from others in my office for laughing at my monitor.
