Sheesh, you weren't born till after her premiership? That's kinda depressing.

As you probably know, there have been several threads over the years on what we were *going* to do when she carked it; but somehow, now it's happened, it doesn't seem quite so much fun.

I just hope people, and the media, resist this bizarre impulse towards canonisation there has been over the past few years, and remember that she did more damage to this country than Hitler. If Britain is broken, she broke it.

I detested her politics which were destructive and divisive. Our present tories are her political heirs along with the "new labour" she sowed the seeds of what we have today . Only those with no social conscience and who were well off loved her. May God forgive her vile legacy. Evil

According to the news last night she was, apparently, an inspiration to women. Not in my memory. We couldn't stand her, and apart from the odd baroness, she surrounded herself with men. Shame really, we had such high hopes....may the old bat RIP.

A lot of people seemed to be in a state of celebration last night with a friend in Liverpool saying the town centre was packed full and O'neills bar had one of the best atmospheres he's experienced

I can also attest to fireworks being let off here in my home town and the Free Derry Corner having graffiti sprayed on it with words to the effect of "Ding Dong the Witch is DEAD!"

I still find the celebration of someone's death in such a maner to be distasteful but I can't say I'm in the slightest bit said that she's dead

I must say that I find the idea of Thatcher as some kind of feminist icon to be utterly bizarre. She did nothing for women, and she herself would have been repelled by the idea.

Pen Master says:
I wonder if many of the writers here were around in the nineteen seventies when hyper inflation and the winter of discontent were destroying this country from the inside. One phrase ('what crisis?) by the socialist prime minister of the time, Jim Callaghan, lost the election to the Tories. In later years one word from Gordon Brown ('bigot') lost the last election to the Tories. On both of these occasions it showed the true attitude of the Labour party to its core supporters. It may claim to support the UK workers but in truth it cares only for beggars dying on the streets in Bangalore. Whatever you may think of the late Lady Thatcher she was never two faced to the same degree as Blair and Brown.

Never trust a politician whether it's Blair, Brown, Thatcher, Cameron, Millband, etc none of them are worth their weight in salt

All politicians do is wear a face to mask their own agenda's. I honestly cannot remember the last time I've met an honest politician save for very very small community elections

Sheesh, I was born in 1946, and remember what a dump this country was in the 1970's.

Hilda doesn't fit your description, in private she wore the same face she did in public.

Every govt. since seems to have been based, at its core, on a belief in the supremacy of the market model. I think that is her biggest and most lasting legacy.

Molly Brown says:
Thatcher is Dead! Let's all party like it 1979!
And she lost!!!!!!!!!

"MARGARET THATCHER is said to have approved a blueprint for an eye-wateringly expensive state funeral. The former Tory Prime Minister's plans are said to include similar arrangements to those given to Winston Churchill, including a send-off at St Paul's Cathedral and a concert orchestra playing Land Of No Hope And No Glory.

Former MP George Galloway said she should got to an unmarked watery grave after details of plans for the expensive pomp were leaked. He said: "A far better plan would be to for a funeral at sea off the Falklands at a spot where she ordered the sinking of the Belgrano."
The cost of Thatcher's funeral?
I'll buy my own shovel too!

In reply to an earlier post on 9 Apr 2013 13:00:19 BDT
Does that explain why when Hilda became PM gov spending as a percentage of GDP was 45%, same as now?

Posted on 9 Apr 2013 13:09:23 BDT
Pipkin says:
What I want to know is 'who will pay for this funeral?'
I hope her cronies who got rich quick: at the expense of our miners, steelworkers, and textile workers and exploiting childrfen in the third world who worked in sweat shops for pennies a week: will be footing the bill.

I don't recall any other EX prime minister being given 'royal' treatment, so why all this palaver for such an evil witch..may she rot in H***
Ah.. husband's just told me Churchill had a good send off... I don't remember...
