Spin says:
How can capitalism and Zen be compatible when one values materialism and the other rejects it? (I cannot see Murdoch or Cameron meditating before they rip us off...)

Spin....Zen rejects nothing....Zen simply embraces reality.....

Spin, if you have a body you need material to keep it going.

Spin says:
Gordon: Yes but you do not have to sell your body and your mind to maintain them. The materials needed to sustain mind and body, given to you free by nature, are sold to you by capitalists. You buy the very things that are naturally free. In short, you buy your existence. On the other hand, Zen asks you to reject the things that are naturally free by denying existence itself. Thus capitalist-Zen would involve the sale of the non-existent; Profit from nothingness. =) (Edit: or indeed nothingness from profit! depends on how one looks at it. Or doesn't look at it) =)

chris gray says:
I think there is a lot of misunderstanding of what Zen is. Zen is simply the Japanese word for meditation. The practise of Zen, though there are a couple of forms in Zen Buddhism, Shikantaza and Koans, is about experiencing this present moment. It doesn't ask you to embrace or reject anything, Just to be fully concentrated in this present moment.
Now as you sit there in front of your PCs, follow your breath as you inhale and exhale immersing yourself in this action. In this present moment, ask yourself where is capitalism?.
In Buddhism; Greed, Hate and Delusion are known as the 3 Poisons and if you are not on guard can cause suffering to you and others. The words Greed Hate and Delusion pretty much describes Capitalism in all its negative forms.

Good iterpretation that chris. Agree, but ridding the West of its materialistic desires is a monumental task, how do you propose to manage it?
