How can we best treat patriotism?

The problem of patriotism can be solved but how?

I think that the best way is to examine the brains of people who "love their country" with some high resonance imaging scans. Then we can see which parts of their brains are not working correctly.

The diagnosis can then be followed by a 6 week treatment program where we can help ease them back into a rational reality tunnel. We can teach them to stop hallucinating things that don't exist-eg UK, USA etc.

Most likely treatments will be:

Mild aerobic exercise
5HTP/tyrosine
EPA/DHA
MBSR
Cognitive Reality Therapy
Zen

Simon I don't mean to be rude but you are so obviously bored and an amateur scientist with your crazy hypotheses, try playing chess for a change, that way you can engage your brain and not have to talk/post nonsense.

There is nothing wrong with patriotism, as long as it isn't an excuse used for belittling or attacking others not of the same country. Patriotism has many benefits the main one being unity of a community or communities of a region, that in turn has so many benefits in terms of social and economic movement although this is not very obvious right now in UK, I still believe when push comes to shove we all know who to stick by, and that's fellow Brits if you were wondering.

With the same respect any belief deserves. Live and let live, mate.

Can anyone tell what I have to do to be a patriot? No-one has defined what it is yet, as it means different things to different people. Many of the so called patriots in this country, are just xenophobic nationalists.

J.Yasimoto says:
As we're doing quotes, John Lennon once sang...

"Imagine there's no countries,
It isn't hard to do,
No need to kill or die for,
And no religions too,
Imagine all the people,
Living life in peace."

Seems like he had his head screwed on. Mind you he was also resposible for...

"Yellow matter custard,
Dripping from a dead dog's eye,
Crabalocker fishwife,
Pornographic priestess,
Boy, you've been a naughty girl,
You let your knickers down".

So, perhaps not.

Spin says:
there is no room for pariotism in todays world. If you want to survive in busines, politics or community, you must rely on foreign input. A purely "patriotic" nation would fail since it would deny the import of resources it cannot produce itself. Evem the so-called "patriots watch Tv, websites, use mobile phones, games consoles, etc etc from foreign nations. A true patriot is one who lives in tin- shack with no technology, communication or education.

Pride in your country and its accomplishments is fine. It's when it curdles into xenophobia and belief in your own 'supremacy' that the problems start.

J A R P says:
When Johnson spoke of 'patriotism being the last refuge of the scoundrel', Johnson meant joining the navy / army. He used the word 'patriotism' as a euphemism for 'armed forces'. And he was right that, in his time, it was a way of seeking refuge from your troubles if you were a scoundrel - and was probably the very last choice you made if you were a scoundrel. Obviously, it was the last one because you were likely to buy it there.

Johnson was the foremost English patriot of all writers. He loathed Scotland, and lived as if England was the best place on Earth for all time.

A country is only as good as the people who live there - people need ideals, and love of home, family, community, town, county, and country is the supreme classic and most useful ideal.

Your thoughts on this matter are right, Spin. it is the best. If you sharpen up your mind you too can be an asset of this best place.

John LENNON was not a flower power brotherly love 'peacenik' but a cynical anarchist well deserving of being shot. I'm surprised it didn't happen before it did.

'John LENNON was not a flower power brotherly love 'peacenik' but a cynical anarchist well deserving of being shot.'

So you consider it acceptable to exercise censorship over someone who says things you don't like by killing him?

And also expressing your view that it was quite permissible to shoot him for it.

As Keyboard Knight brilliantly wrote, "There is nothing wrong with patriotism, as long as it isn't an excuse used for belittling or attacking others not of the same country."
Patriotism is like self-respect - it does not mean disrespect for anybody else.
That warmongers abuse patriotism for their own evil ends is no surprise.
