I see alot of reference to 'camera grips', for example in discussions on compatible batteries. There must be an advantage to putting that extra gear on your camera (mines a Nikon D5100), so would some kind person with the knowledge take me out of my ignorance, please.

Pretty much what it says on the tin really. Makes it easier to hold steady (especially with big heavy lenses) and provides you with two batteries for extended use. Usually gives you an extra shutter release for holding the camera in the vertical orientation (Portrait) too.
