As a total amateur currntly using a point and shoot I am looking for advice on which camera would be best to photograph the Northern Lights. What features should I look for? Does it have to be DSLR or would a bridge camera do? Any help appresciated.

It doesn't NEED to be any more than your current camera.
To get the best photos, however, you will want manual metering capabilities and a Bulb capability (lens will stay open for as long as you are holding it). Which also means you MUST have a tripod and remote or cable release.

Manual metering is also a good way of spoiling every photo if you get wrong! So lots of practise needed.

Just back from a week in north Finland. Got great pics of the aurora. Used canon 7d. Settings as follows.. Bulb, iso 500, f4' exposure 18 seconds, increased iOS to 1000 and reduced exposure to 8 seconds. Focus should be on infinity. Good luck...
