A compilation of Songs from any and every genre that relate to the Mining Industry really ought to contain these tracks if it is to be considered at least half decent

I was a bit wary of listing those two songs, as U2 and Sting not exactly well loved on here :-)

S0d the lot of 'em, you like what you like and you shouldn't be made to feel ashamed of it by 'peer pressure'. Between us Mrs RedAl and I have all Phil Collins CDs - and quite enjoy listening to them too. U2 and Sting are well represented here as well. But then again I like things like (shock horror) disco, funk, pop, reggae, blue eyed soul, soul, house, ambient, trance, motown and pretty much everything else that makes many on here cringe......and I love it! :-)

Plus a lot of the stuff that does get lauded on here too of course.

Iron Hand

With all the clarity of dream
The sky so blue, the grass so green
The rank and file and the navy blue
The deep and strong, the straight and true

The blue line they got the given sign
The belts and boots marched forward in time
The wood and the leather the club and shield
Swept like a wave across the battlefield

Now with all the clarity of dream
The blood so red, the grass so green
The gleam of spur on the chestnut flank
The cavalry did burst upon the ranks

Oh the iron will and the iron hand
In England's green and pleasant land
No music for the shameful scene
That night they said it had even shocked the queen

Well alas we've seen it all before
Knights in armour, days for yore
The same old fears and the same old crimes
We haven't changed since ancient times

Based on a true story - The Ludlow Massacre was an attack by the Colorado National Guard and Colorado Fuel & Iron Company camp guards on a tent colony of 1,200 striking coal miners and their families at Ludlow, Colorado, on April 20, 1914. Some two dozen people, including women and children, were killed.

Daddy What Did You Do in the Strike
(Ewan MacColl)

It was in the year of '84 **** really hit the fan
When 'Mac the Knife' MacGregor, Maggie Thatcher's hatchet-man
Said, Another twenty pits will have to close to meet the plan
And we'll dump another twenty thousand miners

Daddy were you with the first of the first
Did you tell the NCB to do its worst
Or did you save your lily liver
Sell the union down the river
A scab, a blackleg, one forever cursed

When Arthur Scargill heard the news he cried, This Yankee slob
Is a gift from Cowboy Reagan and he's here to steal our jobs
Do an axe-job on the union for the crummy Thatcher mob
But we'll show him what it means to be a miner

Daddy did you man the picket-line
Did you fight to save the future of the mines
Or did you take the wrong direction
Did you squeal for police protection
Did you let 'em see your india-rubber spine

Well the Yorkshire lads came out on strike and said, It's evident
The only way to stop MacGregor and the government
Is to bring the lads out everywhere from Scotland down to Kent
And we'll show 'em what it means to be a miner

Daddy what did you do in the strike
Did you stand there with your mates and join the fight
Or did you show a yellow belly
Spill your guts out on the telly
Did you let the bosses fill you full of ****e

Some didn't heed the strike call for guts and brains they lack
They're the colour of a primrose though their hearts and legs are black
And their noses are all brown with being up the rear of Mac
They're just a bunch of dirty blackleg miners

Daddy did you march at the head
Did you stand there on the picket-line unfed
Or did you sell your mates to have a
Fortnight on the Costa Brava
Did you choose a two-week holiday instead

Well the battle it is joined at last the forces they are massed
On their side the press the telly all the weapons of their class
Plus MacGregor and his blacklegs but we'll never let 'em pass
The NUM's the weapon of the miners

Daddy what did you do in the strike
Did you scab and let your workmates wage the fight
How the neighbours stood and booed us
Said we had the stink of Judas
Daddy what did you do in the strike

Last Day Of The Miners Strike - Pulp

Kids are spittin' on the Town Hall steps and frightenin' old ladies
I dreamt that I was livin' back in the mid 1980s
People marchin', people shoutin', people wearin' pastel leather
The future's ours for the takin' now, if we just stick together

And I said
"Hey, lay your burden down
Seems the last day of the miners' strike
Was the Magna Carta in this part of town"

Well, my body sank below the ground, it became as black as night
Overhead the sound of horses' hooves, people fightin' for their lives
Some joker in a headband was still gettin' chicks for free
And Big Brother was still watching you, back in the days of '83

And I said
"Hey, lay your burden down
Seems the last day of the miners' strike
Was the Magna Carta in this part of town"

Well by 1985, I was as cold as cold could be
But no one's underground to dig me out and set me free
'87 socialism gave way to socialisin'
So put your hands up in the air once more, the north is risin'

And I said
"Hey, lay your burden down
Seems the last day of the miners' strike
Was the Magna Carta in this part of town"

Ah, sing Hallelujah
Ah, sing Hallelujah
Don't let them fool you again
Ah, sing Hallelujah, ahh

By now I'm sick and tired
Of just living in this hole
So I took the ancient tablets, blew off the dust
Swallowed them whole

Oh, come on, let's get together
Oh, come on, the past is gone
Well, the very first commandment
Come on, come on

Let's get it on
Come on, let's get it on
Get it on
Ah, get it on

Hey, lay your burden down
Seems the last day of the miners' strike
Was the Magna Carta in this part of town
