Roughly a year ago I started going to regular open mic nights and posted a few videos of them up here to get some unbiased feedback. I'm still doing them roughly once a week, and I feel my performances have become a lot better, not necessarily on the technical side of things although that's improved slightly, but more on my confidence, delivery and song choice. So I've created a new thread to put my fairly rubbish old videos in the past, and show you all what I've been doing recently.

Got three videos to show you. Two are up on Youtube now, the third is currently uploading.

First up I have a video from Sunday, playing 'All Apologies' by Nirvana on my ukulele. The sound's not great on this one as my girlfriend was videoing it at the back of the pub, and I was having problems with the pickup I've installed on the ukulele so I was relying on a mic. Annoyingly I played it again last night and had the whole pub singing along but no video evidence of it. :(

Second is the one I'm most proud, Dreams by Fleetwood Mac, from last night, again on the uke. This one I managed to sort the pickup out and the camera was right in front of the stage so the sound's a lot better. That, coupled with the way I was set up on stage makes me really like this video.

And currently uploading is a cover of Apple Tree by Wolfmother from last week, that sort of came about through jamming it with a couple other lads who go to that open mic and working out a good way to play it between us. Only problem is that the drummer dropped his sticks halfway through the solo which put me off slightly, but hopefully it shows how my confidence and general delivery has come on.

For ease of use and to stop filling the thread with links I've created a playlist here:

I'll keep adding to it as and when I get good footage, as long as you guys are happy for me to do so. I'm also trying to work out a way of recording at home, so I'll hopefully have some original material to show you all soon. Played one last night and it went down really well.

EDIT: Apple Tree added.

i've had a look and listen, rab, and there's no question that your confidence has improved leaps 'n' bounds, and your playing has progressed as well. i enjoyed the 3rd one most, as you appeared to be enjoying yourself, which benefitted the singing. mibbe, being in a band is your thing.
the f. mac cover shows that you have an element of ease when everything is set up to allow you to concentrate on the playing and singing. the first clip, i felt was beset with distractions, and i don't feel was a great song choice for your singing voice
but, yeah, keep banging them up and i'll keep watching.

Cheers Tech. I do have a lot more fun when I'm up there with other people, loosens me up a bit. The old guy you see wheeling his kit in at the start of that video quite often has a look to see what I'm playing and joins in, and there's two or three drummers that'll jump on if you want them too, although if they don't know what your playing and you have a distinct drum pattern in your head it can put you off a bit.

Agree about the third video, annoyingly I played it much better the other day, plus the punters were interested, which helps.

Thanks for watching as well :)

Good going RAB. Fair play to ya for doing yer bit for the old uke, but the last 'plugged' one was my fave. Can only echo what Tech said about the band thing.
WTF folk would wanna vote down your OP is beyond me; jealousy perhaps? No reason why ya shouldn't sell to us what you're doing, on here, facebook, and wherever else. Anyways, keep it up fella, ya got balls and talent to boot!

Cheers guys.

As for the marker-downers, I wouldn't pay much attention to them. They're like my own personal fan club. :D

Erm, morning all.

Got a couple new videos. Up, both from last night. They are covers of Feeling Good by V. Artistes and Best of You by the Foo Fighters. Feeling Good went better by far, I was a bit iffy before hand as I had to learn a few new chords for it, but I really enjoyed it, just didn't give it as much welly as I'd have liked because there weren't that many people in the pub so I wasn't feeding off them as much.

Best of You didn't go well. I'm used to playing a Dm chord on the uke but this one called for a proper D, which is harder for my oversized fingers to do. Didn't have any problems with it while I was practicing but I was looking at the fret board then, when performing I can't do that obviously. So I didn't really get into a good rhythm and my vocals suffered as a result. But it's worth a watch anyway.

Going to an entirely different pub on Sunday, it's a small sound-proof room with a really good PA apparently, so I should be able to let rip and have a few more 'band' videos up. The pub I go to on Thursdays got a noise complaint a few weeks ago so the drum kit's off the table, good timing for me installing the pick up for the uke because I can't play acoustic guitar to save my life.

Cheers for watching if you do, any and all feedback is appreciated. :)

aye, rab, a definite upwards surge in the playing, and the singing (both songs well suited). 'feeling good' is the most impressive of the two, but perversely i enjoyed 'best of you' better. the more focussed camera work helps too. if you know the song, 'country death song' (violent femmes) might be a good one to try.
