Apart from polls there don't seem to be much else going on here while quite a few regulars have disappeared. Whither Kev fr'instance?

A lot of the gang are doing their own thing, together, elsewhere.

Brass Neck says:
For things to be 'going on' that suit your or the 'gang's preferences you have to post threads which stimulate the participation of like-minded people. Like all things once new and known only by a small group of devotees and early-adopters, as more posters become aware of and use the htreads so the nature of the forum will change and the original 'gang' will influence it less. In some eyes this will undoubtably be to the detriment of the MF while others will see the change as a blessing. C'est la vie.

How can it be in its 'death throes' a a forum when it's regularly in the top 6 of zon fora?

Nugent Dirt says:
Because, as I said, it's all these polls that keep it going.

I refer you back to my first sentence. BTW quite a few of those ahve run their course and the frequency has and should continue to drop (excepting what Neph/LOM may do when he sees the void). Big opportunity for the 'gang' to sieze the reins of power once more?

Some people view the nom/voting threads as either pointless or suffocating the music forum. I disagree, plenty of new and old music has emerged over the last year because of them. The fact that they continually rotate around different music genre's, keeps a level of interest on here. I've been on here since 2009 and at the time the talk was mainly about prog (boo!), whether this band was better than that band, and the occasional light relief when a troll did his/her thing. The vast majority of people on here get along and still enjoy it, which is evident by the frequency on which they post on here.

Spacepig says:
The forum always has been, and always will be, what the users make of it. Users will come and go and the format will continually change over time, it's in the nature of forums all over the internet. How many of the old guard stick around is entirely up to them. But new posters will always drop by with their own ideas, some of them will hang around a while, some of them post once and are never seen again.
At the moment, it is the voting polls that have kept the forum active and in the top rated discussions. As has been said, that will change over the course of time. I have noticed participation tailing off with a few of them, while others are going strong. This will no doubt be the pattern for a while to come. But I have also noted several (reasonably successful) attempts at opening different topics, ie, your own Electronica thread, the Doom Metal and Power Metal ones. No doubt there are others too, those are the ones I have specifically noticed. Tommo's page is going strong, as are several discussions on the Rock pages. But they will only survive if people participate in them.
So Mr Dirt, make of the forum what you will. If you have another idea which you think may interest some of the posters, and will keep the forum going the way you want it to, then post it up. There appear to be plenty of people willing to at least try out new ideas, lets have some suggestions from you and above all else, try and have fun on it.

Meanwhile, I am off to harass your Electronica thread.

OK, back to basics: who's better, Genesis or Yes?

Lez Lee says:
Surely the voting threads are helping the MF? They are after all entirely about music and get people listening to music they wouldn't otherwise hear. They encourage suggestions for further listening and (particularly the 'Fav. Artists') engender interesting discussions. They've also attracted new people who haven't previously been seen on other threads. I do agree there are certainly too many going on at any one time.
The main problem is that they push all other threads down the list where they become forgotten. The only way round this is probably to create a new forum devoted to noms/voting lists.
Something else I've noticed happening is that more and more people are exchanging email addresses and therefore probably chatting more away from the forums. As for the 'regulars' I think a lot were annoyed by the apparent takeover and irrelevant intrusion by one or two people last year and haven't returned.

Yes thank yous.....it's good to have a life as well, so maybe that's another reason this particular forum is not as buoyant as it once was.

As a poster in decline(I admit to posting less this year than at any time since I joined. Too much time spent on Flickr and learning new photographic tricks, sorry!), I would reckon that the Music Forum still has legs, although it has changed in character over the three years I have been polluting it. There was a big change around the time a certain Dr B started his finely pointed and specifically targeted program of abuse. Since then, a bit like a flower bed that has been incinerated with a flame thrower, things have recovered in a sense, but not back to what existed before.

When I started dropping in there was a great deal of dry wit, some superb dry rubs and humourous banter that was genuinely laugh out loud. I used to find it as amusing as anything you would ever see on tv. This good natured humour has diminished somewhat. Folk get too antsy and are very quick to become insulted these days.

As for matters musical, the great debates that existed in the past dont tend to take place much because we have already chewed the cud over matters of interest already and dont feel the need to retread old ground. I am still willing to defend, or even promote, the outrageously underrated Ponga if anyone is interested(cue opportunity for abuse).

As far as secret societies existing within the Zon fora, a sore spot for some, the secret is out, nothing is secret on here. Those that took the time digging around found out that there were were basically places where nonmusical issues were discussed that would not have been of much interest to anyone else.

One of the first things I asked when I decided to "join in" on the music forum was to find out what good these threads are. I have since learned about so much music from so many folks that I am glad I did not know about it many more years ago as I would be totally skint. So many folk here are still passionate about music and are still willing to share information and help others in their quest for musical enlightenment that I reckon the music forum is safe for years to come. Tommos rock thread is a great example of a persons passion for music keeping a thread going through thick or thin.

Thank you for staying awake ;-)
