So the fancy three courses are lined up, with matching wines and rocket science countdown timing. The most fashionable novels/magazine are coffee-tabled with casual precision - the first guests (that nice couple from number 12, he's in banking I believe) have arrived.....

you have warmed up your Bosey speakers and your Brennany gadget...but what, What, WHAT ???? to put on the playlist

its a dilemma...

music ! of course - I'd got the audio book of Kafka's Castle ready to go...The Castle (Unabridged Fiction) (Naxos Complete Classics) - previously that has led to some very memorable evenings'round our gaff

hey ! No fair Mr Bee - peaking at the menu before we bring a decapitated yokel's stuffed head to the table, apple in gob - the surprise element is quite crucial to the overall ambience...

And for Classical fans Tallis - Spem in alium or processed ham in garlic.

Nobody goes to dinner parties to listen to music. One simply needs a bland, innocuous selection, in the background for contrast but easily ignored. Level 42, The Lighthouse Family and George Michael's 'Older' album is the regular standard fayre in my experience.

Oh oh Liq, you ain't never been to a dinner party in my place have you? Food is the last thing on your mind I can promise you that much.

:-)
Just thinking back through some of your nominations and painting a mental picture in my head, Spacepig. I'm sure I would enjoy it immensely, not least clocking the facial expressions of the other guests as the evening wore on.

Spacepig says:
Welcome any time Liq, the one thing I would ask that you don't bring along though is an apppetite (for food that is).

I will confess to having bought 101 Dinner Party Songs - not because I ever give dinner parties, but because I rather liked the randomness of the songs.

It's a bit of a worry that CD5 finishes with Isaac Hayes seductively singing The Look Of Love - is that how your dinner parties finish up?

Mine tend to finish more like this;

hi the Liquidator - I fear such a soundtrack would cause illness and distraction...

I have to confess to having never had a dinner party - but If I did - well a bit of icebreaker first
Let's Eat the Poor
Eat To The Beat (2001 Digital Remaster)
I Hate Everybody
I Want To Be Alone (Dialogue) ah lovely

Valerie, I like the idea of Goldfrapp's 'A & E' being on a dinner party music compilation! It makes one wonder if this is the result of a particularly heated argument or whether something wasn't quite cooked through!

and presumably that's where Paolo Nutini's "Last Request" is uttered.

Val I have that compilation too, for exactly the same reason! The random nature gave me a few ideas on compiling my own collections.

No worries Spacepig. I'm sure I can find a chipper van en route home.
