Why is Paul Weller so infrequently mentioned around here - given his enduring and wide range of varied and cool stuff ?

Having come across this discussion tagged onto an Amazon page for a CD of church music by Sir Arthur Sullivan, my own first reaction was "Who on earth IS Paul Weller?", because I had never heard of him.

An internet search soon answered that question, but if this discussion is being tagged onto classical / choral / church music sources I am not really surprised that musicians specialising in the (arguably) more popular genres don't get much mention.

Don't care the fact that Susan Boyle is overweight, I'm no slim jim either. Nor do I think that she can't sing, she can. What I do object to is the 100% lack of creativity in her repertoire. 'Her' albums are covers of artists songs with no sight of her branching out on her own. Surely somebody who's been gifted a voice like hers, should be wanting to team up with a decent songwriter and create a stunning album that doesn't rely on past hits by other artists? Still like your mum has already said, she's already earnt more money than any of us will see in a lifetime, so she's not fussed. In my mind though, this does not make her a very inspirational singer to all those young potential singers.

Could be a razor deal in there, somewhere?

At the risk of offending my mum, I'd probably better not make some smart alec comment about it needing to be large razor.

I've just remembered why I stopped coming on Amazon's "Music Forum"....& possibly explains why the same old names are still on here night-after-night-after-night. I'll just say to 'TheFoe' PW started from scratch with his solo career. There were very few Jam fans at the first concerts even - I remember 'em well!
After his self-titled debut, every album has been Top 10 [mostly Top 3] & amongst them have been is it 5, or 6? I forget? No 1's - including his latest this year! [tho' not 1 of my favs it still beats practically all other 'current' stuff imo..] Concerts still sell out without fail too. Not bad for someone who's voice isn't that 'great' - wonder what people see in him??? And it is also true to say that he still attains new fans year on year too as is evident on PW m/boards/fanzines etc..over the years.
Without doubt one of the best white-soul singers of all-time, I believe anyway - I don't think I'm alone....

Just voicing my opinion, that I'm entitled to do. I stand by the fact that I don't think he's a very good singer no matter what other people wan't to think of him. One of "the best-white-soul singers of all time", that's a stretch I think.

..& I'd never deny anyone their opinion.
"that's a stretch..." the way that reads is like you've never heard that expression ["best white-soul singers of all time"] before? With respect, you really, really ought get out more as I'm far from being alone my friend [...or foe?].
It's often talked about, again over the years & on different m/boards, with a regular/consistent Top 3 of the two Steve's, Marriott & Winwood & PW. Though I am a big fan of the former two, I differ, offering PW, Boz Scaggs, & Steve Ellis [ex-Love Affair having seen him 'live' for Marriott's Memorial Concert & obtaining the majority of his back catalogue...mainly from the man himself] - tho' the last 2 have been massively interchangeable OTY with only PW staying put.
The same thing about 'White-Soul/R&B & PW' has been said by people as diverse as John Martyn & Robert Wyatt to Noel Gallagher & Amy Winehouse the latter more than once/twice etc..bless her. There's many of us thought the same long before any of those muttered it mind...

My last post was at 2.45 and I was pretty tired, so if it made little sense that would be why. As for "getting out more", what an odd comment! Just because I don't agree with the masses, doesn't make me a hermit.
