Johnny Bee says:
M - Agreed. Given the subject matter, 'Shadow Dancer' isn't a barrel of laughs. But it is a tense, well made, thriller (saw it earlier this afternoon).

"When a young IRA member is forced to turn informant for MI5, nobody expects the disastrous chain of events that is about to unfold. Adapted by Tom Bradby from his own 2001 novel, this outstanding thriller from Oscar®-winning director James Marsh (Man on Wire, Project Nim) boasts outstanding central performances from Clive Owen and Andrea Riseborough as the main protagonists caught in a complex web of political intrigue, set against a deeply insightful depiction of pre-peace-process Belfast. Think Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy set during the Troubles". It says here.

'Day Watch' wasn't bad too btw IMO, many thanks to gorgeous Zhanna Friske.

Brass Neck says:
Apocalypto is a corker. You look at the length and the premise - whole thing in some obscure Mayan(?) language with subtitles and think it's going to be a slog but it flies (violently) by.

My favourite foreign film of all time is this offering from France, Delicatessen [DVD] [1991] It contains very dark humour, revolving around a butcher who is killing locals and selling their flesh as animal meat. It has a sub plot of a woman who has a strong desire to commit suicide but fails at every attempt. Excellent film!

Brass Neck says:
Agreed, it's visually stunning throughout.

excellent film, Foe, quintessentially french with an almost British liberal sprinkling of dark humour. my favourite french film, for what it'sworth : 37°2 le matin (translated rather blandly into english as Betty Blue).

Agree with Pan's Labyrinth, D'lord - a cracking little film.

We got Night Watch a while ago and still an't yet got around to watching it. Reviews I've read go from brilliant to downright awful.

Hi Blastro. D was at a car boot sale last weekend and picked Night Watch up there. Foreign films ain't my kinda thing though. Ain't his either so I guess he didn't realise. :0)

Nightwatch [DVD] on the other hand...great little film.

Hi Blastronaut, I would describe Night Watch as a cross between Blade Runner and The Matrix. It is stranger then both those films and if this sounds exciting to you, then I'm sure you will enjoy it's complex weirdness!

Looks like we're all talking about different films and, to make it worse, I have to rescind my praise as I realise the film I was thinking about was Peter Greenaway's Nightwatching [DVD] which is about Rembrandt's painting "The Night Watch". A very different kettle of fish.

I would also like to sing the praises of Pedro Almodóvar's Volver [DVD] [2006] - a deliciously black comedy. But I wonder if its appeal is mostly to women?

I was and so was Blastronaut and Post Soviet at some point. There seems to be many films with similar names. lol

Blastronaut says:
Well folks, the Night Watch that I wuz on about is a Russian fantasy/horror kinda affair (I think?) and the one that Collette referred to is a film with Ewan McGregor (also, I think?) that, if my addled memory serves me correctly, she may have recommended to me at some point.
Any other Night Watch/Nightwatch/Night of the Watch/Night Watchers/Nightwatching/Wristwatch makes it all terribly confusing! : )

Slightly off subject, but does The Birds have one of the most pointless endings ever?
