Mary Berry was always a cookery writer - my mum had a couple of her books and I've still got Hamlyn All Colour Cook Book, a really good basic book which I bought when I got married in '72. She's only known now for 'The Great British Bake-Off' - not something I watch.

Hi Liq. Amazing how banal TV has got that there are shows about cake baking, gardening, DIY, ironing, vacuum cleaning and scraping dirt out of tiling grout. Clearly there's money to be made here. Of course things are as bad in the US where they have to suffer self-obsessed no-talents like the Kardashians, Paris Hilton and zillions more. Of course the $64k (why 64??) question is what is the IQ range of the regular viewers who watch the dross that makes 'stars' out of these vapid nonentities

Cookery writers, restaurant critics! Now these are non-jobs if ever there were, writing or talking about lumps of bleeding meat and gravy

Cooked rather than bleeding in the case or restaurant critics I would hope.

Two who've separated tonight.....

Chris Martin - Totally overhyped, annoying Mippy Bippy Bongo replacement for the new generation of " Right Onners "...

Gwyneth Paltrow - Macrobiotic munching Diva, from the " It's not what you know, it's who you know" clan. Very overhyped average actress who was in the right place at the right time....And in front of the right paparazzi lens...

David Cameron, brainless super rich kid who has no ideas of his own and whose only policy is to say "this is fair because I say so and I'm the PM you know"

Ed Milliband, brainless quite rich kid who has no ideas of his own and whose only policy is to say the David Cameron is being unfair but doesn't really know why or is willing to reverse his decisions.

After Tommo

Alan Sugar - the man who made millions from bits of plastic and metal fashioned into an Amstrad was not so bad, the smug ex football chairman who loves telling everyone he's always been the best is a right pain.

Alex Ferguson - whatever the man's achievements he has always lacked sportsmanship, respect for others and is the epitomy of all that is bad in sport.

Surely neither of those are 'pointless' people in the public eye, it's quite clear why both have been successful and well-known. The fact that people don't like them is besides the point.

You could say that about the majority and, let's face it, this IS a knocking thread about personal dislikes; all of the above must have appealed to a sizable tranche of our great unwashed hordes in order to achieve their 'fame/infamy. I don't like most of them but they all have a point and a purpose however vacuous.

I don't dislike Sonja, I just think she's pointless to a sphere.

Good shout Wharfy. Surprised her (or 'it' as John Lydon referred to her) name wasn't one of the first on the list. Living proof if any were needed that one does not even require stunning good looks let alone talent in order to achieve megastardom. Just an outrageous boob job and knowing the right people to show them to will suffice.

Are we being allowed two more nominations each?

And don't forget Al, Ferguson also recommended a successor who he must have known damn well would be completely out of his depth and would fail miserably. He can sit in the stand and feign disappointment at every inept display all he wants, but he ain't fooling anybody. Deep down he loves the fact that, above all else, he has been deemed irreplaceable.

Thing is they don't have any purpose. For most of them their fame and fortune is due to pointless, banal TV shows and magazines nobody actually needs. TV and magazines are futile, period. No one will die or become impoverished without them. This thread isn't mean to be about disliking certain slebs. I don't dislike any of these people particularly as I don't know them. What I do know is that they're 'famous' because they've been on inane reality shows like Big Brother, for hosting TV shows featuring people talking to eachother, putting 45's on a record player, making cakes, having oversized fake norks or showing people round houses

Hi Nuge. Have you read John Molyneux's book 'Will The Revolution Be Televised?'? Offers some interesting theories as to why current TV schedules are saturated with the type of programmes you refer to. I think the author may have slightly overthought some aspects of his argument but would recommend nonetheless.

All of which is entertaining to some degree for the hoi-polloi and gives those of us with 'taste' an opportunity to sneer.

For what it's worth, I think Sugar is a pretty good shout. Much of his fortune has been made from selling a lot of poor quality tatt at outrageous mark up.

Nugent Dirt says:
It's not a matter of sneering, but watching TV is mostly a waste of time period and these reality shows are the most pointless waste of all. I mean, they're not exciting, they're not funny and they're not informative so what's the point of them?
