Aye right, sure that's what they said about the moon last year...and you should try our shower here - on a wild night the milky way comes through and sometimes Lucy in the sky with diamonds

I'm getting at the fact that while you and I see the night sky and understand its majesty and magnificence, so many people just don't seem to "get it". We're just tiny little specks on a smidgeon of a part of an atom in real terms. And depending on your point of view, we are either very lucky or unlucky to have this thing called self-awareness, or "intelligence", which enables us to feel fabulous or terrified by our perceptions. Do you agree?

I remember John Thaw saying that when he was making the Aussie episode of Morse, he felt really disoriented and disturbed by the unfamiliar night sky.

My daughter said something similar when she did her final year of Uni in Melbourne. Because I'd familiarised her with Astronomy while she was growing up, she said she actually felt uncomfortable under the night sky there. Like thinking she "was on another planet, or something."

Personally, I put it down to all those strange substances that students imbibe. :-)

It is difficult to 'get it' Mondo and as you, I and some others well know, many SF authors have had a go at explaining 'it', or at least, speculating. Maybe the release of Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus' next month will help elucidate, or not? Should be an entertaining way of trying to 'put us in our place' at least. Be lucky!

Did you see a programme recently about the amount of people in England who never see the night sky in all its glory due to living in towns, where the street lamps 'hide' it. I'm lucky that I live in the country on a road that has no street lights. Last year I was going to buy my Wife this projector that sits on/by your bed, when you turn the main light off it showers the room with stars. I didn't buy it in the end as apparently, from reviews I read , it had quite a noisy motor that would have spoilt the ambiance.

My closest pal bought a £few grand's worth of telescope before he sadly passed away two years ago. This has reminded me that I never did get round to having a 'butcher's' through it. We're going round for dinner with his wife tomorrow, so guess what I will be doing whilst she and the most recent are putting the world to rights? The forecast for moongazing isn't too good tho'.

You are so right Neph! When I was a kid we had clear skies and little or no polluting street lights, and we loved being out and trying to outdo each other in naming the stars and constellations we could see. The Milky Way was clearly visible too in those days, oops! NIGHTS!

If it was cloudy we would be sitting on the wall at the end of our street and either telling round robin stories about "space" or - especially if the girls were out too - singing and harmonising the really old songs.

Yeah, big moon tomorrow (sat night/sun morn) will probably interfere with the meteorite shower. It's from the South East if anyone's interested.
