Honestly didn't try Googling it. Just a case of remember 'good' and 'thanks' from school.
See! I did listen sometimes at school!! Back then, French and German were compulsory, I think, until one reached the fourth year. That's if I'm remembering correctly.
Or, it might've been French in the 1st year, then a choice of the two for 2nd and 3rd year.

And to think, my long term memory's much better than my short. Reckon it's all knackered! : )

We all did French, then in 2nd year the girls who were good at French did Latin and the others did German. In those days you needed Latin to get into Oxbridge unis and of course that's what we were supposed to be aiming for! I loved Latin and found it easy. I did a year's German correspondence course when my friend and I started going to Austria in the '60s - I can still read it a bit but couldn't have a conversation.
You also needed a foreign language to be a librarian. These days you need a degree or for an assistant you can get by with oral weaving ;-)
