Funnily enough, my kids are not at all adverse to anything that pre-dates their birth. My youngest (22) should have been a teen in the 80s as she loves all the punk stuff. All three (aged 22 to 28) have a good knowledge of music from the mid-fifties onwards. I'm always amazed to hear them singing along with something. When I say "How can you possibly know that?", they just shrug their shoulders. Must have good parents. I know when I was a totally hopeless new mother, I used to leave a little trannie in my son's pram which was tuned to a golden oldies station. Must pass that tip on to them for when they do start reproducing.

I watched Scorcese's Hugo last night and it had barely started before I declared this to be a real FRENCH film. Everything about it worked beautifully for me. The attention to detail, the movie references and in-jokes, the special effects, the acting, the script, the true history of Melies, the co-producer (Depp)'s cameo. Empire magazine described this film as love story about movies, by a movie lover, for movie lovers. Spot on. I was totally enthralled.
