JJMMWGDuPree says:
I'm trying to remember all of Gershwin's orchestral pieces. American in Paris, Rhapsody in blue, I used to think Concerto in F and Rhapsody 2 were the same piece but logic suggests that they're not, and then wasn't there a Brazillian symphony? I know I was fairly certain there'd be a 'Collection' of them, but if it exists then I've not come across it .

It's always hard to know what to recommend in cases like this because what I like probably isn't what you'd like. The Mitch Miller that I'm after features American in Paris, Concerto in F, and Rhapsody in Blue. Miller conducts, David Golub is on piano, and the London Symphony Orchestra do all the hard work :D

I remember Mitch Miller from my childhood. He's a US arranger and bandleader best known for making sing-a-long records and stuff like 'Yellow rose of Texas'. I certainly don't remember him with any degree of affection, but on this record... I don't know, maybe he injects some of that cheerfulness into it. When the CD arrives I'll let you know if it's as good as I remember.

I've got a friend (Who strangely enough is yet another JJ) who's now 76, but he keeps getting dragged out of retirement because he can still cut it with the big rigs, live.

JJMM...
From Wiki :
"In 1987, Miller conducted the London Symphony Orchestra with pianist David Golub in a well-received[10] recording of Gershwin's "An American in Paris," "Rhapsody in Blue," and "Concerto in F."

This isn't very expensive ! -
American in Paris / Rhapsody in Blue, Concerto in F

There's a complete list of Gershwin compositions on Wiki, just go to 'List of compositions by George Gershwin'. There is indeed a second rhapsody which I didn't know about 'til you mentioned it. Nothing Brazilian though!

Edit -Sorry, only just seen your later post.

DAS part 2 comes up as one of the choices after part one, sounds muddy, listening through a fog in parts, then thin, am continuing to look, want most orchestral works plus songs, sung by either different singers or one very good one, eg ella F, do have some gershwin already on CD's from 78's usually good performances marred obviously by poor sound. The only person to make 78's sound decent was robert parker, the oz sound engineer, HAVE, YOU HEARD ANY, cheers chris

All very interesting, all you boffs with your expensive audio equipment. However I live in the real world with very limited income, and remember well the vinyl records of my youth, of which I have a fair selection in the attic!! I would be more interested to know if cheap cd players give as good reproduction as the old fashioned vinyl. I am considering getting my vinyl transferred to cd but wonder if Im going to lose all that "ambience" I used to get long ago. Any down to earth advice would be appreciated.
