Anybody see the Danny Baker programme, ostensibly about the album though it segued into viny, like nobody ever plays CDs all the way through and nobody ever skipped tracks on vinyl.
This would explain why pop people actually think there are good pop albums when, by definition, they are hierarchical with key tracks ( generally but not always singles ) and fillers.
He even cites Revolver claiming Yellow Submarine is out of place while I think it par for tthe course with TNK the exception.
Some punkrock/ indie/ Britpop producer selected Ziggy Stardust, Transformer and London Calling which is pathetic. He claimed the title track of the Clash has a great intro and I don't disagree but, as with much pop music, it falls apart when the silly voice comes in. He also said many of the bands he produces cite Ziggy/ Bowie so at least we know where the blame lies.
Jeremy Clarkson was a disappointment, having previously heard him humiliate Gambo over the Beatles, so he's obviously been brought into line. If it weren't for Peter Green Rumours would be filed with the Carpenters except with rubbish songs. Dark side of the Moon is poor even for them and I haven't heard the Supertramp album but don't need to to know it's not in the same Galaxy as Selling England, which he referenced twice but still seemed to fear including a Genesis album. Perhaps we still have some way to go.
Danny Baker could have had a full house if he'd stuck to 3. Court is as good as any Crimson album but Money wouldn't be my choice of Zappa nor Physical Graffiti my choice of Zeppelin. I can' help thinking the PG people either got into Rock too late or kept listening too long, and probably both, while everybody I know switched to Soul/ Northern/ Funk circa 74/5/6. It's even truer for those who think of punkrock as part of rock and Baker reckoned the Golden Age was 69-77 confirming it all went horribly wrong with punkrock and has never recovered. Personally I would go for about 66-75.
The real treat was the thang who shocked everyone by pulling out Hot Rats ( or am I being sexist), again not my choice though I'd have it ahead of Money. She followed it witth a Coloseum album claiming there isn't enough Jazz Rock ( I think I'm in love ). Personally I put them in the Jazz end of Prog and there's piles of great Jazz Rock and vast amounts of rubbish if you look for tthe right colour. Along the way she scolded those who criticize John McLaughlin for his unsurpassed skills and Music must be the only thing in the world where this can happen.
Nevertheless, 2 Zappa albums, Zeppelin and Crimson - things must be looking up, though no Black artists whatsoever and Joni Mitchell, Bakers fourh choice, the only female. There is a Moaney Joni track I like but, when I listen to the ladies, it's Black just about every time.
Apparently the series will include a reconstruction of Please Please Me so they're still claiming the Beatles not only made good albums, but went some way to inventing them, despite Lemon saying Sgt Pepper was never concieved as an album and Macca saying singles were always uppermost, and conveniently forgetting SiNAtras Songs for Swinging Lovers from 56 is probably still the best pop album ever made.
