Death Master

Death Master

Her head was yanked back by the hair as a large, tanned hand moved menacingly down her throat. Her sobs flecked his shirt with tears, which now flowed freely, their salty water aggravating the wounds accumulated on her naked flesh over the endless days she had been held captive. The end must be near now and she was so sure that it must end. She tried in vain one last time to wrench free her hands, but the bindings held firm. Knees, so long on the floor, would not have held her up anyway - had she tried to run. He was calm; she was wretched. Instinctively, she pulled her thighs to her abdomen to protect her unborn child. His hands tightened, her eyes widened - pleading. His pressure did not relent and slowly everything faded...

After months of mental and physical therapy, Yvonne Giles, an Oxford DI, is back at work and that's just how she likes it. So when she is asked to hunt the serial killer responsible for taking apart young women, the DI jumps at the chance but hides the fact that she is suffering debilitating flashbacks. The victims appear to meet their murderer willingly, telling their families they're going on vacation. No one sees them again until their macabre death scenes. A quirk of the killer's signature is the food and wine stains he leaves on the backs of the girls.
Yvonne is told to work with Tasha Phillips, an in-her-face, criminal psychologist. The DI's previous experience of working with a profiler involved having a case thrown out by the Crown Prosecution Service for reasons of entrapment. She's not enamoured with the idea of working with one again. Tasha has a lot to prove. The DI has a lot to get over.
A tentative link with a 20 year-old cold case brings her closer to the truth but events then take a frighteningly personal turn..

I published my first novel Talisa Creek (Drum Chase Trilogy) earlier this year and I've had two 5* reviews...

In the early hours of Christmas Day, Drum Chase starts a fire which kills three generations of his family. Only Drum and his elder brother, John, survive. Jumping forward sixteen years we find the reclusive John Chase escaping from a US military hospital and returning home to London. His memory is shredded, his body weight has dropped 50kg and there's a mysterious microchip embedded in his calf. He also has a bank account brimming with seven million dollars. Somebody somewhere knows what's happened to him and John returns to the final places he has memories of. He travels around Los Angeles, San Diego and Texas, and it's not long before his forgotten past catches up with him.
Subjected to interrogations and violence he dredges up vivid flashbacks inducing more questions than answers. Where did he disappear to? Why is the black-eyed Armstrong torturing him? And who shot Larry's son? Drum and John will discover the answers at Talisa Creek.
With a father hell-bent on revenge and a brother seeking redemption the net is closing in and time is running out for everyone.
Talisa Creek is a pacy thriller compelling from the first pages when disaster strikes the Chase family.

Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Excellent
It was a very fast moving and excellent story. I thought that the author covered some unpleasant aspects in the story without going into too much detail, which made it a more pleasant read for me personally.

Book Description:

Washington where nothing is what it seems. Not knowing that can cost you your life.

Jack Halpin, once an up and coming senior executive, is on a downward career and personal projectory. His beliefs and all the vestiges of his career and privileged family life are challenged as he is submerged in a dangerous world for which he is ill prepared. A member of the Fairfax Gun Club, Jack is a traditionalist who believes in the right to bear arms, law and order. He has a strained relationship with his wife Poppy, the daughter of respected Senator Jock Kessles, a man who is deeply disappointed in his unsuccessful son-in-law.

Unknown to Jack, the mysterious death of a senator is the signature tune to a traumatic change in his world and everything he has taken for granted. Surviving the onslaught of rapid, life or death challenges and the sinister forces facing him, will require all his resolve. This journey will bring him face to face with murder, political intrigue, depravity and betrayal.

The Screen Conspiracy is an intelligent thriller which uses fiction and an array of unique characters, to tease out a political conspiracy where evil, reality and patriotism overlap seamlessly. Strong characters, unexpected consequences, racy humor and a readable, escalating tempo combine to make this a novel that immerses the reader in the storyline and search for justice.

Excerpt:

In the beginning God created heaven and earth, then he created Lake Tahoe. That sales pitch ran through Senator Tom Riley's mind as he sat in his car, parked in the drive of his elegant manor home overlooking the lake. It was the house of his dreams, he had the family of his dreams, he had the life of his dreams. His love for politics and Washington would always be second to his life here in Zephyr Cove. Washington life punctuated his weekends at home rather than the other way round.

The light was dimming over the lake. He watched as his wife, of thirty years, Olivia, moved throughout the house, silhouetted against the warm glow of lamps and the log fire. Choices, he had choices. His palm wiped the sweat from his brow. One choice lay on the passenger seat, his revolver. Beside it lay his cell phone. My god, how could he leave her such a legacy of scandal and loss. But dignity, his dignity, would be intact.

He argued back and forth with himself. There was no third choice. He had to choose. Another figure appeared through the glow of light on the balcony. His beautiful daughter, Emma. She saw him in the car and waved down. He smiled back. He reached to the passenger seat and picked it up. He knew what he had to do.

Left with little to use and nowhere to hide Harri now finds herself stalked across the frozen desolate landscape of North America pursued by the former love of her life. All that she has to keep her going is the hope that she can make it home to die in peace.
Survival After The Zombie Apocalypse Book 2

The third fast paced thriller from author R J Dillon

British spy's disappearance in Berlin at the height of the Cold War has never been fully explained. When a retired British Secret Intelligence Service officer is brutally murdered in Berlin, the two events are dismissed as unconnected, simply a coincidence.

Following the dead officer's trail from London to Berlin, Nick Torr - the SIS Director of Covert Operations - uncovers an obsessive quest for a missing convoy of Nazi gold seeped in myth and legend. In the shadowland of a city still divided by memories of the Wall, he discovers that the gold is only one piece in a complex puzzle of treachery, deceit and betrayal. In Berlin, he uncovers a number of traitors linking past and present together, secrets that Soviet Military Intelligence, the GRU, are brutally preserving through violence and murder.

Danny sat back low on the sofa, remembering the bayonet going in, the resistance, the blade grating against ribs. He remembered the eyes of the tall talib in the black turban, knowledge exchanged in a look.
Remembered the smell of garlic on his breath. Remembered a flipflop falling from the man's foot as he pitched backwards.
Killing wasn't good or bad, it was the job, stopping them hurting a mate, getting in first. Not good or bad, but intense.

----

Bob Lovejoy took his nose trimmer from the bathroom cabinet and looked hard into the shaving mirror. The skin around his eyes was puffy. He pulled at the rumpled bags of flesh with a fingertip and watched them creep slowly back into their original shape.
He stretched his mouth into a humourless grin. The movement sent tiny ripples through his chin. Several of his teeth were crooked. They were a bugger to clean, even with that fiddly string stuff Wanda had bought him.
Bob let out a long sigh and stepped back from the mirror. He placed a finger on each nipple and stirred, watching with a feeling of sinking despair as his moobs jiggled like jelly.

Going Down by Steve Martin
This novel follows a young man's journey into the dark world of a tough young offender institution as he is sentenced to two years' imprisonment. It is a savage world in which he will either sink or swim.

For those who sink, the consequences are dire but - for those who learn to swim - the damage is far greater!

This novel will take you into a world that is seldom seen. Written by an author who spent several years in a young offenders' prison, the novel has the power of an accurately portrayed and vividly displayed world of violence, nihilism, dark humour and despair.

For Danny Lancaster - ex-paratrooper turned private detective - it should have been a simple job.
His client - the beautiful Countess Camilla D'Allessi - hires Afghanistan veteran Danny to watch Seventies rock star Mickey "Tattoo" Carpenter, see what he does, who he meets.
But Danny's nosey nature gets the better of him. Camilla's "simple" surveillance job leads him to a grisly discovery at a remote Cornish farmhouse.
Then the bodies start to pile up. A young girl is dead from a drug overdose, another lies in a coma. Someone is out to take revenge on the dinosaur rock band Death Squad.
Suddenly, Danny is wanted for murder. All he has going for him is supreme fitness, a talent to duck and dive and an unshakeable belief that, "something'll turn up".
Only he can prove his innocence. And to do that he has got to stay out of a prison cell.
Nothing will stop Danny hunting down the two murderous maniacs and their mystery backer for a final high-octane showdown of mud and fire.

M Stanley says:
My violent urban crime thriller The Gamblers is available for the very reasonable sum of 1.99

It's a twisting, turning heist tale featuring a lot of very bad men. As Heath Lowrance, author of The Bastard Hand says:

"THE GAMBLERS - Martin Stanley: Kandinsky is a hardcore gambling addict and loser who owes far more than he can repay to loan shark. He's a guy who's screwed from the get-go. But when he overhears a plan to rob a drug dealer, he convinces himself and his friends-who are even bigger losers than him-that they can pull off a miracle. THE GAMBLERS is a sprawling, complicated novel with lots of intriguing characters, a great sense of humor, and a beautifully constructed sense of impending doom. The large cast are all tied together in really clever ways that you wouldn't suspect, and as each of their personal sagas play out, and wind closer together, you're left slightly amazed that Stanley is able to pull it off. It's a very well-structured novel, but Stanley's real strength is the depth and believability of his characters."

Danny held out the Kalashnikov. Bob's eyes were wide with a curdling mixture of fear and excitement. "I've never done anything like this outside of a fairground when I was a kid," he said.
"Win anything?"
Bob shook his head. "Just a goldfish. It died two weeks later. My mum flushed it down the loo."
"Okay," said Danny. "Now concentrate. It's easy."
Bob's eyes followed the gleam of live rounds as Danny hooked the banana magazine against the lip of the receiver and snapped it home. "Like this," snapped back the cocking handle, "like this," and clicked on the safety catch, "like this."
Danny handed to rifle to Bob who braced to take the weight and looked suddenly surprised.
"It's light."
"A kid could use it, they often do. Okay, pay attention. Don't fire unless you absolutely have to. If you do, remember the key is speed and aggression."
"Speed and aggression," Bob mumbled.
"Right," said Danny. "You have a full mag and the safety is on." He leaned forward and flicked a lever. "That's single shot." He clicked again. "That's full auto."
He tapped the front and rear of the weapon. "Foresight, backsight, line those two up with your target. Makes a hell of a noise and tries to pull upwards so make sure you hold her down tight or she'll climb up off your aiming point."
Bob nodded dumbly, gripping the AK tightly, fearful of moving his hands in case he touched anything.

"Right, when you need to, click off the safety, select the fire option and squeeze the trigger."
"What happens then?"
"You spray and pray."
