Fantasy does not need to be serious

Right, yeh, now I get you.

Yikes! My first is 240 pages and that's 100,000 words dead. I reckon I could probably trim this to about 140k... or make it into two books. Less satisfying but perhaps one solution. Then again, nobody baulked at the £10 price tag for the first one, I reduced it a few months ago because I realised the second would be an expensive monster.

Cheers

It's a harsh environment out there in the bookshops, MTM.

next time you have some spare moments, look at a fantasy/sci-fi table in a bookshop, and check out the prices against book size. Very illuminating if you wish to sell real books rather than ebooks only.

Hmm... I can imagine. I did read that if you can't hit about 70,000 exactly with every book you've no chance at all and that it's the reason the Harry Potter books got longer, and longer and longer!

Cheers

It should be a big consideration when you are writing. Unless you have a major contract, and you are therefore looking at either self publishing or signing with a new press, the printing costs - almost certainly with Lightning Source International - are a substantial factor.

By the way, LSI produce a fantastic result. Quality wise, they stand up against the big 6 easily and do not make you feel like a poor relation when selling the product.

By the way, guess where my word count is? Yes, just below 70K....spooky.

And me too, Jim
I'm half way through Z14. He's quite a guy... at least, what's left of him is ! I'm enjoying it very much

Will, yep, it's LSI I'm using.
Jim, enjoying Z14 although I have to keep stopping to seethe with envy. It's great stuff.

Yep its right up your alley, isn't it!

Whoop! Thanks, Davie and MTM. Shucks ;)

Looks like you'll be the last people enjoying it. Sales have dried up. *sob* All is lost. ALL!

Okay, I got one sale, but I think it was my dad. Does that count?

Up my alley?! It's the kind of stuff I would actually write, if I could. And of course I write the kind of stuff I like so... yes... thinking about it, I'm working on something - to come after K'Barthan 3 which has a similar vibe... I'm really looking forward to gettign my teeth into it. Might have a go at it alongside K'Barthan 3, just to relieve any dodgy blocked moments.

Cheers

No Jim, that was me! ;-) Bought it yesterday. So there you go, you've that sale to your Dad still in hand.

Maybe you're my dad?

Not as far as I know....

I think a test may be in order...

No, honest, this is where I have to admit to being a girl. I think I'd remember giving birth. Unless I was impregnated by aliens and gave birth under the influence of mind expanding drugs that stopped me from remembering.

Posted on 15 Feb 2012 20:24:07 GMT
Arse, I've outed myself.

Posted on 15 Feb 2012 20:26:42 GMT
:)

Don't worry, there are worse things to be than a girl. It's nothing to be ashamed of in this day and...I'll stop right there and just make it very clear that I'm joking!

Not sure about female fantasy authors though... apart from Ursula LeGuin and she was great but definitely not funny.

Ah, it is as i thought, MTM has been a woman all along... drat, and i was going to start calling ( her / him ) Sir, in respect for ( his / her ) superior knowledge of litteracy.
What about the late Anne Mcaffrey. She was female, although her pern series was not writen in a comic form. I loved reading it, and would like to fill my book shelves with her books once again

Yep, I was going to mention her. There are plenty of female fantasy writers. I'm bad enough at listing male ones though. I have the memory of a....oh look, some cheese!
