Hi there.

I currently have an Acer Aspire 5740. It ran great for a couple of years but over the past few months the battery died (not that I could get much charge out of it when it was brand new anyway - 2 maybe 3 hours maximum) and it's overheating really badly, even when I'm just running browsers and msn, etc.

I have money to get a new laptop. I'm looking to spend between £500-£700. I need something that will run the Sims 3 on high settings and also the MMO named City of Heroes. My current laptop plays both but lags and overheats while doing so.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

hey miss Hayler
U can get a dell studio xps m17 from ebay for £629, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dell-XPS-15-Laptop-3-1GHz-i7-6GB-Ram-500G-NVIDIA-Free-Photoshop-Mcafee-/160771656031?pt=UK_Computing_Laptops_EH&hash=item256ebcc95f#ht_3074wt_1396 i play world of warcraft on mid-high settings and its ok, its got an i7 processor 6gb ram and 2gb nvideo geforce graphics card, good for work and play, if u want a laptop for gaming, then i am afraid the max battery life you are going to get is 2-3 hours.
hope that helps

Hi - looking at the link, I have a similar request -

I'm looking for a new Lap-Top for my wife. She used to be a mad Gamer but has not been playing for a couple of years. That was until Diablo iii finally got a release date and now she's back to her Mad-Gamer old ways...

Cant play Diii on her old Dell XPS although it's a fantastic 18' 1900x1080 screen... This is 5 years old and was one of the first Quad Core off the production line.

The business is picking up the tab for this as it's also used for the Accounts & Marketing info so we have a very healthy budget - especially when the last one is still running 5 years on - Say £2,500.00 (Max).

Can anyone suggest a solid 18' Screen 1900x1080 - Extreme GPU Gaming Laptop? I did go to Dell for Alien ware but the basic spec on this type of machine runs past £3,000.00 and you can buy a second hand BMW Z3 for that money!?!?

Don't Need Touch Screen, Not worried about the exterior too much, need lots of grunt, top rate graphics and preferably Blu-Ray... Any Ideas?

Hi P. Grey,

It's quite funny how many people are upgrading their systems to play Diablo 3. I'm in a similar position to your good lady wife and wish to upgrade my current Gateway laptop as it's pushing 7 years old now.

I don't know about you guys but the thing that gets me is that all these gaming laptops are just hideous with glowing/neon lights and huge vents etc aimed at the 'kids with money' market.

You should remember that Diablo 3 is not a power hungry game and you can check out on youtube people playing the beta smoothly on pretty low spec laptops. Also an additional problem that I have had in the past is that gaming laptops are big, heavy and cumbersome...and by the time you've set them up you may as well of bought a desktop =)

I've been looking at something a little more subtle for Diablo 3:

Acer Aspire Timeline M3 Ultra 15.6 inch Laptop (Intel Core i7 2637M 1.70GHz, 6GB RAM, 256GB SSD, DVD SuperMulti DL, LAN, WLAN, Webcam, BT, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit)

Bare in mind that people on youtube are playing D3 on Macbook Airs lol....i wouldn't reccommend one of those though.

Miss Hayler would you recommend that laptop for The Sims 3 and ALL expansions - World Adventures, Ambitions, Generations, Late Night, Pets and Showtime? Not the Stuff Packs because I do not have those. I'm looking for a laptop for gaming and work too. I'm stuck on what to buy, I've found a DELL XPS 15 but the Acer looks better.

Hi there!

I use this laptop to play with all the expansions and stuff packs for the Sims 3. It runs everything on high with no lag and with custom content. It's been a brilliant computer and it performs really well!

Thanks for your response! Have you had any problems with it otherwise? (if you don't mind me asking of course!) such as break downs, blue screens etc because I just read a very unconvincing review on Yahoo about this particular laptop, but from what you said it sounds like what I want!! :)

hi p. Grey

if you really want that kind of laptop and you have that price range it is best to go to origin pc and get one of there custom built laptops. they do over clocking and are professionals when it comes to getting the most out of a mechine. you can get a eon 17 with all the trimmings for £2100 and it will play all the new games on the market this year and probably for the next 2-3 years as well (all on high settings).

Hi All in the Link - Just to update ... After lots of looking and reviews / Promo Codes not working / The release of a newer Chip-Set to upset everything mid selection ... We went nuts and got a (Dell) Alienware - 18" Super Res Screen, Duel ATI Graphics Card, i7, 8GB Ram, Pimped, Clocked, OMG... Its Awesome! Chews up Diablo iii - Looking for a new game that is 'Super GPU Hungry' to throw at the Laptop and see if it stutters... Currently, everything is processed like it's butter... Not a hesitation, it slips through without effort... I reckon we'll get to squeeze another 5 years or so with this one... The last Dell XPS machine (Its still going - but slowish) did 5/6 years productive gaming (initially at top end/Full) - Its now been downgraded to a Work-Horse and subjected to Spreadsheets and Word Doc's - It runs hot and the battery is knackered but its still good, 17" screen - first of the Duel Processors... so, yes, throwing a shed load at a laptop is Madness... Until you see what you get in Years Per Pound Spent...

Dont buy a Dell XPS 15z, the mouse buttons keep sticking and causing locks and scroll lock to switch on, it is a killer if you try and play games on it
