I use a Samsung RF712 .7 with 6gb and 1 Tb HD, Full 1080p screen with BR 3d player etc etc.
Very quiet running and never under any strain. Keyboard has backlight when using which is great at night.
Very sturdy and well made. I don't know if this machine is still current for sales as I've had mine for 12 months
but I highly recommend it.

If you want a laptop in a small package and good specs including a decent graphics card(for a laptop) id recommend the new samsun 5 series i7 3610 (ivy core) geforce 650 gt 1 tb and 6 gb 1600mhz ram 17" screen and blu-ray no back-light keyboard though buts its quiet and great sound

The RF711 is also very quiet, also 1TB but has 8GB memory.

The Toshiba L 750-201 Lap Top is virtually silent, and a great fast Computer with a massive amount of storage

Well, I'm no profession in the hardware field, but any laptop with a harddrive will make noise, and as the fans bearings wear it will only get noisier. My suggestion is to get a laptop with a SSD. You can get 128Gb SSD's for around 60 (search google) nowadays in the UK, so probably cheaper elsewhere. That boot up many times faster than a HDD equivalent, give off no heat and therefore require little effort to keep cool, and therefore little noise.

not quite true.....I have two hp's and a top of the line acer with 120 gb ssd...the hp's are without ssd and are silent whereas the acer is noise prone from the fan though not irritably noisy. It depends on the type of fan installed and also the system's processor unit's quality....
All the hp's and samsung are generally good quality machines.....enjoy

My new Lenovo g770 is barely audible while my old Sony vaio VPCF11Z1E sounds like a harrier jet ,even when it was new.

The words 'Apple' and 'expensive' are pretty synonymous.....

A product with SSD drive will be the answer. Have a look at the Acer S7. There is a cashback promo running for purchases made up to 31st December 2013

I have this laptop, it isn't quiet by any stretch of the imagination.
