@Sarah: As @DL says, the FIRE looks like a phone screen right up to the edge - the HD has a half inch border around the screen
Does it have a camera, only comes on the HD.

Otherwise check out the Serial number - it should start with D0025

B001 = Kindle 1
B002 = Kindle 2 U.S. (Sprint)
B003 = Kindle 2 International (AT&T)
B004 = Kindle DX U.S.
B005 = Kindle DX International
B009 = Kindle DX Graphite
B008 = Kindle 3 WiFi
B006 = Kindle 3 3G + WiFi (U.S. and Canada) NOTE: Some European cities may receive this serial number as well.
B00A = Kindle 3 3G + WiFi (Europe)
B00E = Kindle 4 NoTouch Silver (2011)
B00F = Kindle Touch 3G + WiFi (Kindle 5) (U.S. and Canada) [Mostly]
B011 = Kindle Touch WiFi (Kindle 5)
B010 = Kindle Touch 3G + WiFi (Kindle 5) (Europe)
B012 = Kindle 5 (Unknown) [If you happen to get your hands on one of these, please enlighten us!]
B023 = Kindle 4 NoTouch Black (2012)
B024 = Kindle PaperWhite WiFi
B01B = Kindle PaperWhite 3G + WiFi (U.S. and Canada) [Mostly]
B01D = Kindle PaperWhite 3G + WiFi (Europe)

D01E = Kindle Fire (Kindle 6)
D026 = Kindle Fire 2
D025 = Kindle Fire HD 7" (Kindle 7)
Edit: List still stolen from @DP's post ages ago, but I just think it's a great list :)

Denis Powell says:
The HD has an HDMI port as well as a USB port and you can see a camera at the top of the screen when held in Portrait orientation.

Actually my HD serial number begins D059 ;-)

Mr. Bump says:
Fire HD says HD on the box and has a camera lens facing you. The non HD Fire has neither. Other differences are memory size, cost and screen resolution.

@DP: Oy vey! Now you are telling me your list which I am stealing all the time and trying to pretend is my list is no good? So now I have to sell it back to you, plus 5% handling ;)

Denis Powell says:
That'll teach you to believe everything you read on the Internet ;-)

Actually I copied it from Wikipedia.

BeeJayTee says:
The Fire weighs 5 grams more than the HD.
Theoretically, if you drop both from a 20th storey balcony the one that smashes to bits on the pavement first is not HD and you should send it back.

Denis Powell says:
Theoretically that won't work. Aerodynamics apart they should fall at the same rate regardless of weight ;-) At about 3:27 in the morning I'll wake up with the formula in my head, but not be able to remember why I wanted to know it.

DaveyH says:
The previous generation has a camera and a micro HDMI port that you'll find next to the micro USB port.
